Former Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa denounced on Tuesday a new escalation of political persecution against the country’s progressive movement , after the Prosecutor’s Office ordered simultaneous raids on the homes of opposition leaders, including Assemblyman Patricio Chávez and figures linked to the Citizen Revolution.
Through his official account on the social network X, Correa warned about the judicial operation and directly accused the government of President Daniel Noboa of using state institutions to neutralize the political opposition.
“ Instead of fighting drug trafficking, this miserable government only knows how to persecute , ” the former president wrote, calling the raids an act of political intimidation.
According to information released by former assemblywoman Sonia Gabriela Vera , the operation was carried out by order of acting prosecutor Carlos Leonardo Alarcón Argudo , within the framework of a prior investigation based on a complaint with confidentiality , a legal figure that has been heavily questioned for its discretionary use in political processes.
According to Vera, the file lists Rafael Correa, Andrés Arauz, Luisa González and other political actors as “under investigation” , although no formal charges or public evidence have been presented so far.
“ This is not an isolated incident, it is a systematic pattern of lawfare ,” Vera denounced, pointing to practices such as prolonged investigations without charges, media stigmatization, and judicial selectivity.
Hours after the operation, Correa expanded on his complaint and stated that the raids were carried out based on a complaint filed in November under a confidentiality agreement.
“ Not even in the worst dictatorships! The Prosecutor’s Office orders raids against opposition leaders based on an anonymous complaint. Enough is enough! ” the former head of state declared.
The former president also warned that the legal actions reached former presidential candidates and former public officials, which —according to his complaint— constitutes an attempt at political dismantling prior to future electoral scenarios .
The selective politicization of the judiciary in Ecuador is part of the practice known as lawfare , previously used against leaders such as Lula da Silva in Brazil, Cristina Fernández in Argentina, and Evo Morales in Bolivia.
Opposition sectors question why, while raids are being carried out against political leaders, structural problems of territorial control, prison violence, and the expansion of drug trafficking persist .
Unfortunately, the “citizen revolution” party is not a progressive party.
Their last candidate supported drilling for fossil fuels and opposed abortion rights.
