The worst thing about The Golden Sword is its title. It feels like the name of a less memorable film. So much so, I sometimes confuse it with more mediocre faire [sic] from the era. The name also does little to hint at all the fun in store for the viewer. Released in 1969 with Cheng Pei-pei in the starring role, The Golden Sword is Lo Wei at his most sumptuous and inventive as a director. It has everything from singing beggars to a clan of amazons in a film filled with romance and adventure, as well as the occasional moment of terror. And it is one of the best Cheng Pei-Pei performances from her time at Shaw Brothers.
