One of the dumbest die for democrats users on lemmy, both can’t understand why people see the usa as an empire AND refuses to see that it was what George Lucas based the empire on in star wars

The war in Vietnam started with French troops fighting alongside resistance to a dictatorship, the dictatorship which had launched all out war against south Vietnamese towns and villages in 1968, ultimately they failed and the US refused to withdraw from the war for many more years as a result of the incompetent Nixon administration.

I honestly think I hate liberals more than conservatives sometimes, at least conservatives just take a simple evil position instead of bending over backwards and breaking every bone in their bodies (not their spines, they never had those to begin with) while unhinging their jaws to twist the most evil shit you’ve ever heard into sounding like the lesser evil

My dad (conservative) would talk about how unfair the health system is (we got royalled screwed by it as a family like 5 unique times, besides the usual amount of shit it piles on a typical family). Then he’d rant about how Bernie was a commie when XY news showed a clip of Bernie talking about the 1% or single payer or whatever. Atleast he wanted (then and now) something to change and clearly understood at some level something was wrong. He wouldn’t support that change without it going through some republican worm, but he knows this shit sucks at least.

Lots of liberals either are or pretend to be on the “good” side of the system (IE: can afford the bills, can travel if they want to skip a line, etc). So they pretend like nothing is wrong, Joe Blow is “just” mad at minorities (while also hating minorities aswell), and that this system is the best thing that ever could be created.

Feels a lot of the time that conservatives are failed communists (because they get funnelled into it), while liberals are wannabe communists (because they funnel themselves away). Conservatives (seemingly, or pretendingly) don’t even know what the reality of political theory entails. (IE: Couldn’t tell you what Liberal meant in 1850 vs 2000.) Liberals know enough politcal theory to be able to say something slightly more intelligent (IE: could answer the above). But also know they can’t even nominally support any policy left of Hitler because then they wouldn’t be "liberal"s anymore.

    @FiniteBanjo@lemmy.today @finitebanjo@piefed.world

But back to your claim that the USA is the Empire in the Star Wars movies, what the fuck does that make the Viet Cong? Princess Leia?

The rebel alliance are literally intended to represent communists fighting the USA in Vietnam so yes, the Viet Cong, if you desperately want to use the deorgatory the US and their colonial minions chose to give them. That has always been the influence of Star Wars. Ever since the start.

Don’t like it? Here’s Lucas saying it in his own words unequivocally, and pushing back against the attempt to make it about any other empire(English lmao). It’s the US empire. Always has been.

I genuinely do not know how you are this fucking oblivious and have such terrible media literacy. How are you this oblivious to what your country is? You and the people like you are some of the most propagandised people on the planet.

You’re banned on hexbear with both these accounts so I’m not even sure if these pings will go through but it sure makes me feel better.

Oh look, it’s the lib thing where they demand every analogy be a perfect 1:1 representation of a real world thing, and try to tear it apart because obviously no analogy has ever worked like that.

They’re just so redscare-pilled that it genuinely stuns them when they discover the heroes in all of their shows about literal rebellion against empire are all based on communists.

They never stop to think about who the rebellious against empire are in the modern world. They never stop to realise they are the supporters of empire either.

The entire view of the world they have doesn’t match up to it so they fall into large amounts of cognitive dissonance. The ones with real intellectual curiosity actually investigate and learn when they experience this emotion whereas the ones without it lash out in anger and defensiveness.

Oh FFS the point of imperialism is the subjugation of nations outside of the core for economic gain, direct annexation of land was just the method. This “urrrrr its not imperialism if the economic subjugation doesn’t come with a land grab” is like saying it’s not fascism if there’s not enough germanic-looking eagle symbols on the jack boots’ uniforms.

Umm, the AmeriKKKans said they were protecting the Americas from Europe, so it’s anti-imperialist. Don’t ask why they wanted the Europeans out! lenin-dont-laugh

Lenin: All the social-chauvinists are now “Marxists” (don’t laugh!)

This user, without irony: All the imperialists are not “anti-Imperialists” (don’t laugh because I’m not joking!)

Mother fucker who do you think the “rebel alliance” is in this context?

    Manifest Destiny…

That was over by 1850. Nobody from that time is alive today.

lol Manifest Destiny never ended, American Indians are still denied sovereignty and confined to impoverished reservations

Day/night cycle theory of imperialism that holds the British were the first and only empire, as they held enough far-flung territories that it was always daytime for them somewhere, so they remained in the “empire” state long enough to capture the title like it’s a big game of king of the hill.

I was already drinking when I saw this but some of these comments made me switch from wine to vodka for a bit, I’m still too sober for this amount of psychic damage

Edit: actually switched from wine to vodka not whisky, sorry I don’t drink hard liquor often and was looking for whisky when I found the vodka which is why I got mixed up

Someone go find the interview where George Lucas literally just says its about that.

He saw apocalypse now(iirc) and wanted to make a Vietnam movie sympathetic to the Viet Kong but didn’t want to never ever work again in America.

Also I like George in a funny way, but his take on a Vietnam movie would probably suck tbh

I was wondering why the comments were so incredibly stupid. Things like “The Vietnam war started with the French fighting alongside resistance to a dictatorship attacking the South…” Then I realised I was looking at comments from .worlders
