When I watch a video I can click on the CC button. It highlights in white which means it’s “on”. But no subtitles appear.
Does this just mean the authors of the videos didn’t make subtitles. If so maybe the app should say “no captions available”. Or is this purely a problem with the app?
I’m functionally deaf and really wanna switch from having all my eggs in the YouTube basket but I’m having real trouble making PeerTube usable for me due to captions issues.
Hmm, it might also mean that subtitles are broken somehow or are still being transscribed by the Whisper AI that some instances run.
I am also fairly new to this, but noticed this as well. But I believe if that feature is generally disabled on that peertube instance the button doesn’t show.
It will only show the “CC” icon, if there’s subtitles. However, as already mentioned, the AI generated subtitles might be empty and therefore you will not see any subtitles.
I noticed on my tests that if I run a worker for creating subtitles, and enable GPU accelleration, those subtitles end up blank. Probably an issue with my setup, but I imagine this could be a common failure mode.
I don’t use remote runners on my instance yet, but I know that if it’s a video where someone is whispering, the AI does not pick it up very well and most of the transcript end up blank.
Yeah I guess, but in my case the identical video is transcribed fine if I let the Whisper AI model run on the CPU, it just takes much longer to complete.
That is weird. If you haven’t already, you should report it to their Github page.
