Damn, that movie is going to be awful.
Based on these images?
Little known fact: You can determine the quality of an entire movie franchise from untouched principle photography. See how Mr. Zelda sort of looks like if a young Hayden Christensen and Leonardo Dicaprio had a baby? That’s all you need to know.
Based on it being a live action movie of a video game, which historically never do very well, and are never written very well, and the fact that the 2 characters in these images are wearing outfits from different generations of games?
I would say it’s a good bet the movie won’t be great.
“Well ex-cuuuuuuse me, princess!”
I sincerely hope he says that line in the movie
Given the rest of the comments in this thread, here’s a controversial opinion: Imma reserve my judgement instead of judging a book by its cover.
I find it hard to tell if a movie - especially its plot - is good or bad based on just 3 images.
The only thing about this so far that I dislike is that they didn’t find a fully blond guy to play Link. The fake blond look is not a great fit.
They should have dyed it pink.

why blond? Links hair can be Brown, Blonde or even Pink.
IMHO his hair should have been Pink or Brown.
His hair is brown in many early incarnations, and went brown-blonde before full blonde. Personally think this colour in the image is peak OoT link hair shade.
His hair looks like this to you?

Yes, that colour.
That’s the lighting making some parts darker than others. Not blond hair with brown roots
Um… That’s a drawing… there is no light.
Are you unfamiliar with the basic concepts of perspective and lighting when it comes to the visual arts?
Do you believe it is intended for the parts of his fingers that are not in the path of the light being given off by the fairy to be darker than the parts of his hand that are directly lit? That he has two-toned fingers for some reason?
This is what it feels like sometimes.
Live action is a mistake.
Yeah, we need studio Ghibli to do it!
Does Link have dialogue?
Hep! Hut! Hyyy-Yah!!

He only repeats one line over and over: “Well ex-cuuuuuuse me, princess!”
That would actually get my butt to the cinema bench. Especially if he “flies” by jumping on bomb blasts with his shield
I’d also accept if he was essentially Beavis ala The Legend of Beavis which is one of the funniest things on YouTube.
That was pure art
I think I’ve seen this. He just says “As you wish.”
He’s less of a talker and more of a “Hey, Listen!” er.
I have zero hopes they can pull this off. Links game personality doesn’t translate well to film. Nits just gonna be a teenage fantasy romance.
It’s very rare for Zelda to have actual romance, it’s only been Skyward Sword and BotW / TotK. I’m sure Miyamoto and Aonuma would rip some hearts out if someone tried to steer this movie too far from the games like that.
Using the Mario movie for reference, this will be a very targeted release.
This movie is made for the BotW/TotK crowd. There is a nearly zero chance that this movie has reference to any other console Links. It will be a fantasy played straightforward because Nintendo doesn’t do memes or references unless it’s to an existing game that does, like Smash.
This seems like the most plausible take.
Probably 10-15 years ago I found a project from a bunch of high schoolers called Legend of Link. I always felt like the very self-aware, tongue-in-cheek tone translates really well. But I don’t think an official project could pull that off as well.
Looks absolutely horrible
it’s literally three static images
The trailer hopefully will show:
- Jack Black as a Goron king wincing saying “ooo right in the dekus!” after Link gets hit in the groin by a slingshot and crosses his eyes before falling backwards
- The Rock as Ganondorf doing the eyebrow raise, and saying, “can you smell what the 'dorf is cooking?”
- James Bautista sneaking into a Gerudu camp wearing a lacy tube top, face covering, and flowing pants
- Link’s horse making a suggestive whinny and pushing Link closer to Zelda played by Zendaya
I didn’t know I needed more Jack black after his last few movies (god borderlands was awful)
But this would be hilarious.
It would be bad, but funny.
If they wanted to make a parody movie about Zelda then definitely and I’d watch it and have a good time, but too many movies parody themselves and it’s not to my taste.
I like my parodies funny and my action dramas serious. No need to wink at the camera after every lame joke
WHO LET THE DOGS OUT
sommmmeBODY ONCE TOLD ME
The Rock as Ganondorf doing the eyebrow raise, and saying, “can you smell what the 'dorf is cooking?”
You say this as a joke, but Dwayne Johnson would be a fantastic Ganondorf.
This would be better than what the real movie will be
They really cast the best looking actor for Link’s role. He really looks like the most recent iteration of the character in the video game.
Does Zelda every use a bow in any of the games? I always thought she was more magic-oriented
She uses light arrows against Ganondorf in Wind Waker. I kinda wanna say BotW too but maybe I’m misremembering
Also against Ganon in OoT
Yes, it’s part of defeating Gannon in multiple games. Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker, maybe Twilight Princess and Breath of the Wild if I remember correctly. There are definitely more. I always thought it was a core part of her iconography…
Link is not nearly femboy enough. I give it a 1 out of 10.
seems fine, but i still can’t believe they didn’t partner with Ghibli for this.
“The Lord of the Rings” is a multimedia fantasy virus isn’t it. Just gets into everything.
Check out the Shannara live action series, the stills kind of reminds me of that (even though I only watched 1 episode)
I see it, maybe a little more post-industrial. But if you’d told me these were stills from Rings of Power (especially the last one) I would have accepted it without question.
Also, how have I missed out on Shannara? It looks amazing, glad you mentioned it ❤️
The books are really good (to a point), the show was not bad and starting to get good when it ended.
I remember reading the books, but I felt way to far away from the target audience for the live action so just gave it one episode. I hope Im not giving you disappointment ;)
Not at all falling in love with a classic series of fantasy novels and then feeling alienated by a modern cinematic adaptation written for a younger audience and a different time that I nevertheless feel should exactly reproduce my experience of the original and therefore am invariably disappointed is one of my favorite things, I do it all the time. Already got the first audiobook downloaded, looking forward to it.
I kind of love the walking mess of Walker Boh, but that character is a bit further in the series (if I remember correctly). If you remember let me know what you thought when you feel youve made up your mind about the books
Ok I’m about halfway through The Sword of Shannara and I’m enjoying it but it really feels like we’re just doing The Fellowship of the
RingMagic Sword. They just got through the halls of the dead (which they had to take, even though they’re guarded by the dead and are super dangerous but it’s the fastest route) and I 100% expectedGandalfAllanon to die fighting theBalroglake tentacle monster. But they get out, and Shae gets washed away by the river, and now Allanon’s like “welp, the one guy who could wield the Magic Sword against the Evil Sorcerer, the guy this whole quest is about, might be dead now. He might not be, but let’s abandon him and go find the Magic Sword anyway”. I mean the author has explicitly stated that Allanon might have other plans up his sleeve but I really don’t understand why finding Shae isn’t priority #1.So basically older style youth fantasy. Maybe its not only the live action Ive grown out of, I might only remember the books through rose tinted glasses
There were two leaked videos a couple days ago. Link wears a darker green hooded cloak on top of the outfit seen here, and there’s a black horse with a black and red saddle. It looks like Zelda has a tawny horse with a gold and black saddle.
Also Dichen Lachman (Ms. Casey from Severance) is playing Impa, based on the video below.
At least from the costume perspective, I think they did a good job.
Those two look perfect for the role. I don’t think I have seen him in anything but I saw her in King and Conqueror and she is great
