Howdy Comrades, brothers, sisters and fellow heathens! I have a question. Is there an open source app like Migu that streams video torrents instead of downloading them? Like for more than just anime?
If you didn’t know, there’s an app on Droidify called Migu that streams anime torrents in real time instead of downloading them. It’s awesome! De-centralyzed media!!!
What open source software do you use for streaming media?
I use Kodi with Elementum plugin for this.
WebTorrent Desktop is a bit abandoned, but last time I tried it, it still worked despite some warts (I think it wouldn’t work with newer Chromecasts).
My notes also have:
- https://github.com/hauxir/rapidbay
- https://github.com/anacrolix/torrent?tab=readme-ov-file#downstream-projects (This library is good at streaming, software using it should too)
Libretorrent for android. Just click sequential download, wait a few seconds, then open the file.
qbittorrent or deluge can also do this for desktop.

Technically using torrents it’s always downloading but focused on leeching instead of contributing to the overall share.
It is more leeching than sharing, but if it is actually torrenting then it should also be uploading while the “stream” is playing. So kind of like PeerTube. Just really depends on both how it is setup, and how popular the video is at any time. Though it sucks that there isn’t a good way to make sure connections happen.
There are lots of times that I get torrents the regular way that I would like to have uploading to other peers at the same time. But will notice that I get few to zero peers for uploading with popular files. There are times that I will leave it seeding for weeks without any uploading. So I end up deleting the torrent so I can move files or free up space because I already made a second copy to sort. Not always the case, but frustrating to not even see a few MB go to anyone. With PeerTube I see my upload working more consistently, but main issue there is just not often that I am watching something that a lot of others (or any others) are also watching.
Yeah that bothers me that it isn’t giving back to the torrent itself. Just leeching to stream.
streaming sucks. just ddl bro
Stremio
I’m looking at TorrServe now.
It’s on f-droid droidify is just a client for f-droid, also I’m pretty sure migu streams not download and this is inspired by stremio which is the thing for other things than anime
Stremio I saw. But it didn’t look open source and it had trackers listed on the aurora store. I’ll check it out.
it’s open source but has proprietary blob, server.js is proprietary https://github.com/Stremio/stremio-shell/issues/435#issuecomment-2844471402
Proprietary json? Of is it some weird binary thingy?
Sorry I meant server.js, you can’t self-host it.
Tnx. A shame, tho
Check out Cloudstream. It requires extensions to function and some of them include torrent providers.
Bless you and thank you!!! Getting it now. I’m also working with TorrServe Matrix now.
What operating system?
Android
Thank you! Looks like Quasar with Kodi is the way! I was looking for Android but desktop is also good!
Elementum is a similar Kodi plug-in that streams torrents
And you don’t even provide a link to it. Shame.
Just search Migu on F-Droid/Droidify. The URL link box went away when I added the photo. I’m on thunder which is a very new app and still adding features.
Yeah, sometimes I’ve noticed with the Voyager app I use that I have to go back and edit the post. For some reason the URL or the associated picture disappears.
I googled for 30 seconds and found a few prospects. Did you try googling things before you posted them?
Yes I did. For several days. So I decided to asks here for different answers from people who are privacy and open source focused. Why even make a comment like this?
Are people really upvoting the idea that he searched this for several days? Did anyone bother to search it? lol
I’m guessing you also don’t use aurora store. If you did you’d see the majority of all the apps mentioned in internet web searches all have ads and trackers. That’s why none of the web results worked for me. As you’ll see none of the web searches mention TorrServe. They’re not accurate.
Details were left out. I’ve actually been working on a del googling project for two months. Off and on I’ve looked for open source, free streaming. My time has been split between working on anonymity and security for doing journalism work. So I’d say the four or five times, probably more, I looked into streaming over those two months was about half an hour or so, I wouldn’t find what I was after and I’d get back to more serious stuff. The last two days were the same. Turns out I had the app the entire time. TorrServe Matrix off F-Droid. I mistook it as a torrent downloader. But when I looked the past few days, I more so worked on music streaming, it just turned up apps that all had trackers on them on the play store. I couldn’t find anything on F-Droid because I already had it. I left all these details out on my OP.
If you explain why you don’t like the ones you found in a Google search, it helps us understand more precisely what you are looking for.
Okay I see where you’re coming from and how I left out some big details that would have helped. Yeah I researched for a while now and everything charges or has trackers built into the app. Like Stremio. What I was looking for I found. TorrServe Matrix off F Droid with the torrent search app. I was after something open source with no trackers built into the app.
