Hello fellow neurotypical human. I too am glad I am a normal person that likes things like small talk and shirt tags. So, how about this weather? Do you also love the sound that office lights make?

If you are State-side, Walmart sells their George brand t-shirts for like $8 a pop and they are tagless(well tag is on the side by the waist).

No tags, comfortable, I still have some from almost 10 years ago that are still holding on great

Is liking those lil noises that most people don’t pay attention to an autistic thing? I’ve got really sensitive hearing, I used to be able to tell when a TV was turned on and off from across the house because of a distinct little noise they made as they powered up or whatever. (New TVs don’t do that and it makes me sad) I love shit like that.

Or is this about the sensory overload flavor of autism where ongoing noises might be difficult to handle?

I was referring to sensory overload mostly. For me, I process 10x to 100x more information than neurotypicals so I hear a lot more of the background sounds that others filter out. This goes for all sensory inputs too. Daylight is excruciating for me. perfumes and candles almost feel like a burning sensation in my nose at times. And the microfiber myths are true. Fuck microfiber.

If I get overstimmulated, those sensory issues get overloaded. and Those sensory issues are what cause the overestimation. So, for example, crowds start out as a chatter noise that I assume NTs hear, but over time it becomes an unbearable wall of unfilterable sound, akin to horror movie tension moments where they use sound to ramp it up. It plateaus and never subsides unless I remove myself from the area. This reddit thread does a good job of showing what it’s like. It’s not perfectly representative but it’s hits pretty close.

Both! I liked being able to sense the TVs turning on and off thing when I was a kid, but also it was one of those things that would add to being overwhelmed if I was already in it. I think partially because nobody else could hear it and being overwhelmed often came from being told to stop feeling things ‘wrong’ in the first place

my non-crt tv has coil whine when it has to display something really bright, I’m not a fan of it (at all) but maybe you’d like it? Loads of things around me do it under load (the TV is an oled which is why it has to be bright). Video cards are a big one that I constantly notice if I turn off vsync or it’s not working right.

Ooh, that does sound like something I’d enjoy. I haven’t noticed my video card making any noises, as a copout I could say maybe it’s masked by the fans, but more likely my hearing just isn’t sensitive enough anymore.

I drive a golf cart at work regularly, and when I power it on the battery or whatever makes a distinctive little noise no one else hears so idk

Was listening to an old citations-needed episode recently where they mention that (as of time of recording, somewhere in 2022 IIRC) something like 95% of China never even went into lockdowns at all and people were mostly just wearing masks but otherwise living normally. Meanwhile it’s 2025 and the pandemic’s going strong here and all I can do is wear an N95 forever while hoping I don’t randomly get disabled. Death to America.

life in China during zero covid was pretty great for the most part, but i can’t imagine 95% never went into temporary lockdown or restrictions. most cities in the east had at least a few weeks or couple months here and there (mostly spring 2020 and occasionally in 21 and 22), most people experienced some kind of short lockdown i’d say. 95% of the land area, maybe

Makes sense tbh, 95% of the population would exclude just about every major city which seems unlikely. An error on their part to not specify if it was by land, which is definitely much less important.

I can see it now: “Autism is an invention of woke coddling liberal Nazis. Anyone high functioning doesn’t have it and needs to try harder and stop being fucking lazy slaves who act different, just fucking man up and uh maybe accept working in the fields all day under horrible conditions is all you’re good for. Anyone who’s low functioning is just uh childhood vaccine damage which is why we’re banning all vaccines for children until they’re at least 10 years old. Also all educational and workplace accommodations (and relevant protections) are hereby rescinded and I will be directing federal agencies and contractors to stop engaging in them by the end of the year. So to conclude prevent autism by not getting dangerous vaccines and also not engaging in wokeness and accommodating people, just bully them instead please. Thank you”

Guessing this is going to be to do with women taking paracetamol (also known as acetaminophen and Tylenol) while pregnant, a bunch of studies recently came out showing a casual link with autism, but the majority consensus is that it’s fine to take paracetamol while pregnant and is actually recommended as a pain reliever, as opioids and NSAIDs are not recommended for use while pregnant as they could harm the fetus. Paracetamol is one of the few pain relievers women can take while pregnant currently, which is quite surprising to me, I always thought it was a blanket ban on pretty much all pain relievers. If paracetamol actually is harmful that would really suck for women given the above, one of their few options for pain relief while pregnant would be removed. Though I have serious doubt on how valid the science is here, this is probably RFK Jr just looking for a quick win. I know it can be bad for your liver in long term use, but better than most NSAIDs.

Good post. They’re probably gonna just start shaming pregnant women who take paracetamol for pain. After all, god wants women to suffer during all stages of pregnancy (since Eve ate the apple).

[edit] I watched some of the autism press conference, and said “the only downside” is that pregnant women will need to “tough it out” a little more

      One nitpick:

showing a casual link with autism

causal link? Or just a correlation. Probably just a correlation, and I imagine it’s a very difficult one to untangle, since pregnant people taking more tylenol than average probably have other factors that could effect the fetus.

When I was pregnant I got sick and my doctor had me take Tylenol to keep the fever down since a high fever can be bad for the fetus. Dunno what else a pregnant person could take if they get sick, which you’re more prone to while you’re pregnant I believe.

Paracetamol is one of those things where if it were discovered today, there would be no chance you could get it OTC. I wonder if it will get rescheduled.
