It’s not left vs right, its us 99% vs the 1%. Don’t let “culture war” distract us.
Now imagine a younger virile man pushing populist policies channeling anger to it’s source, the rich.
The dems have just enough sheep to convince primary voters the unpopular moderate is the safe choice, biden had elizabeth warren split the protest vote when all moderates dropped out it should be remembered, despite them failing over and over and everyone hating them.
We need a young, aggressive, and angry bernie to raze and burn dem infrastructure to the ground and rebuild a populist party from people that do not suck.
It turns out populist policies are popular, who knew! Not the Democratic establishment, they were chosen to not be popular. Because they call the Republicans populist, the Republicans are bad, therefore popular bad. In a country that elects leaders based on popular votes. It is too stupid to refute one would think but here we are. And that is not even the least logical of the arguments coming from the Democratic establishment.
Didn’t watch. But every Trump voter I know likes Bernie. They will not tolerate any Bernie slander and would have voted for him in 2016 and probably this last election too (except for the one family because they’ve gone down the Trump is ordained by Christ route and will not be returning to sanity).
You appear to know a vastly different pool of Trump voters than every single one I’ve met.
Bernie is S O C I A L I S T, which makes him literally the antichrist to any MAGA conservative.
Well, they’re swing state voters. I’ve never heard any of them call Bernie a socialist. But two of them are women and both like Bernie. But both would describe themselves more as Libertarians or Independents. But they’ve consistently voted Trump with the men around them.
The other couple definitely wanted to vote for him in 2016, they were largely democrats until then and switched “Republican” that year, and voted under the “Trump is an outsider and a businessman” trope. They’ve just been doubling down every election since then (wife is a foreign born Latina too which yes, a head scratcher (she’s been spending time outside the US since the election and I really think they bought the “just the bad Latinos” bullshit which I thought they were smarter than that. Sad.).
And even the Christ is King and the end is nigh household says Bernie is a “good guy” and a shame “established demoRATS” wouldn’t let him run.
Also, I worked in construction, largely electricians I’m referring to, so they have a few more brain cells than say an Iron Worker or Laborers (those are the loud t-shirt wearing stereotype Trump voters), and the Trump guys liked Bernie too because he’s “not a corrupt democrat” and they saw him as an outsider. They hate the banks and loved how he trash talked them.
All of those groups will stop you if you say “but Bernie” and go “no woah yeah he’s ok I’d have voted for him” Again these are swing state Trumpers. I also know a friend’s brother, farmer married to a European wife, who would probably scream socialist. So certainly you’re right some of them are just brain rotted beyond repair. And I’ve talked to plenty of drunk Trump voters male and female who I’m not sure how they put their shoes on in the morning much less if they could even define what socialist means.
I’m just not sure a self-described Libertarian would support Bernie. Either they have no idea what his platform actually was or they’re not actually Libertarians. He’s definitely not in alignment with the party of small government.
At best maybe he might have put more federal funding to causes that they believe actually deserve it (schools and healthcare rather than the military industrial complex), but it’s definitely not the laissez faire, no government overreach, “not with my tax dollars” causes that Libertarians are nominally aligned with.
I think they use libertarian because they’re allergic to the word liberal. Daddy (only living relative) is full on QAnon. Without going into too much personal detail let’s just say they’re not a deep political thinker. They view themselves as “conservative” but they’re far less socially conservative than I am in actual lived practice. Heavy policy is a little too abstract for them. Rhetoric clips and political perceived “outsiderness” is more their level of comprehension.
The other one occasionally uses Libertarian because they’re Christian (which, debatable from where I sit) and want a “hands off my life” approach more than they care about actual government function.
Again both of these people barely finished school and have had their lives largely dictated by abusive men. One is even Native and still voted for Trump because at least he’s not “the establishment” they also praise Bernie for the same reasons.
I think it boils down to two women grasping for a label to describe themselves in an environment that is hostile to who they actually are in practice.
I actually do know a couple family members who are Trump voters but liked Bernie. they were sick of the way things were and wanted change
Well they sure fucked that one up then didn’t they.
Pure Trump propaganda nonsense.
Absolutely not my intent. I’m speaking from real experience with people I know. As mentioned in another response, they’re largely swing state Trump voters that I have had longer conversations. So that may be a factor in why they’re not as staunch?
Thank you, I needed something political but uplifting. I hope we can hold off fascism long enough to get to the next election. I also hope that young progressives can take back the democratic party. I’m not optimistic, but seeing Bernie talk reminds me that there is some hope.
There is no hope unless we organize, on our own forums, we could do it connected to the fediverse even. Cooperate publicly and privately on shared goals, including finding and grooming candidates.
We need a slate of populists attacking the rich, not republican light dem sell outs.
They are gerrymandering a lot of States so tight that they do not large margins so losing a few percent could be enough to get someone else elected in that District. Which is how the Democrats won the house in 2018 despite aggressive gerrymandering in the majority of states.
Why wouldn’t they like Kibbuts Bernie?
