Getting used to China now. Fun fact: Feddit.UK is not blocked here. I can use the fediverse mostly fine. Although thumbnails and images from instances that are blocked (such as lemmy.ml) don’t work, neither do images from BBC articles. But it’s cool. Browsing the internet is interesting, especially in indieweb spaces. Hotlinked images break a lot, anyone relying on google fonts for their site has the font break, and loading times can be slow for some places. I don’t think sites with neocities subdomains work.
VPNs aren’t the most reliable unfortunately. I have two and have to alternate between them. I do not know if it’s a problem with the VPN, or a network thing. I read something about the OpenVPN protocol being blocked on occasion. Most commercial VPNs from western companies are blocked, so I rely on ones I’ve made myself back home. They work 80% of the time.
I’ve also been having wacky dreams that I am back in the UK and have the power to teleport back to China at any time by waking up.
Wait, so ml is blocked but we aren’t? That’s pretty funny!
How long are you in China for?
Lemmy.world isn’t blocked. Contrary to popular belief, lemmygrad isn’t blocked either. Hexbear doesn’t seem to work. Mastodon.social doesn’t work. It’s probably a matter of whack-a-mole… Which is low priority anyway as everyone on these instances speaks English.
it was… stressful
my wife is buying a shared ownership house, and I read the paper work first then we read it together so I have a head start on any questions we are on the final set of paper work, stuff needs signing and sending back to the solicitor for it all to go ahead. and today at 5pm I noticed a massive typo, the yearly amount for service charges etc was listed on the contract as a monthly payment!
I don’t do hot weather, there hasn’t been a year in the last decade I didn’t get heat stoke at least once, so this weather is killing me :(
but otherwise :) all is good
On the whole, kinda shit. I did go to my first pride yesterday, though, so that was fun.
I’m pretty broken, not sure I can do two consecutive day fests with a club night between them these days… But I wouldn’t give it up for anything. Enjoying moments with a crowd all vibing to a song, experience, or just in the midst of the moment. It’s cheesy but it’s why I’ll never stop loving live music. Right now, think I need a late afternoon nap to prep for next week!
It’s hot and muggy. I can’t sleep. Voluntary redundancies at work, which will lead to compulsory redundancies. Car MOT stress. Wifes family are permanently in my house. I am trying to cut down drinking alcohol (and I am not sure why???!!)
The news is, well, the news. And my kids asked if there is going to be a war.
Lots on. Good to keep busy.
Wifes family are permanently in my house
One of my colleagues in the office is Ukranian (though he came to the UK long before the war). Because of the war, he now has to live with his parents in his house :P
A war between you and your wife’s family or…
Sucks about the redundancies though, I know a few people going through the same thing.
Sounds like you’ve got a lot going on, fingers crossed your car is ok and the in laws move out!
yeah alright cheers mate, how about you?
It’s been fine, the week has been pretty uneventful really. It was my dad’s birthday yesterday so we went out for a meal which was also a kind of joint father’s day do, and then it’s been father’s day today which has just been a normal day!
Excellent mate. I went out as well, there’s a place in town that has those autonomous wheeled bot things that guide you to your table, and bring your food to you and stuff. My boy wanted to see them for ages so off we went.
Only downer this week is my Pokémon Blue save died when it crashed while saving. Ten hours down the drain, that was my project for this summer.
Did you get sorted for new running hooves after?
Oh that’s cool, how was it? I assume they still have actual people available to help out if the robots fuck up?
Not yet no, although I’ve managed to book a physio appointment for this Friday, so hopefully I can get some good advice!
Yeah they do, and when it gets busy with folk razzing about between tables, the staff do the serving and the bots just take the dirty plates and empties back to the kitchen.
The meal was… decent, not great, but certainly not poor - but I guess you went for the presentation, the bots, the cocktails presented in steaming bell jars, and kids meals presented on a shovel. It was comparatively inexpensive too which gives it a thumbs up.
Good luck with the physio though. You’ll be out banging miles back into the tarmac before you know it.
Yeah, managed to work with the weather for once… pressure washing the green slime off the patio when it was raining, starting to paint the shed when it was dry… some small(ish) jobs and the garden just looks fresh again.
Found some old 8mm film… might take that to the photo shop in town to both help him keep the shop open and get the unknown films onto
VHSDVDUSBSomehow work has felt like a heavy slog over the past few weeks. It’s not just me as several people at work have said the same.
Our dogs on the other hand provide a welcome balance. Saturday was grooming day, which do ourselves. It took us four hours for the two dogs to give them haircut and another hour today to tidy up the bits we obviously missed.
My neighbours are still alive. No good weeks for me while those stomping and screaming abominations are alive.
Hope you manage to get some peace and quiet somehow
