The first “Super Group” Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young; released a song named Ohio that got big time air play at the time and still does today, regarding the Kent shooting.

          https://youtu.be/l1PrUU2S_iw

It was wild being from that area and talking to people who protested that day and hearing their stories

Yeah I grew up a couple states over and my Dad was protesting at a similar sized college back then.

He got tear gassed and beat up too, and he always said if I was in a protest to bring a video camera and pretend to be Press.

But now that they’re shooting obvious journalists, I don’t think that would work.

TL;dr: Students from Kent State were protesting against Nixon expanding the Vietnam war into Cambodia, other people from Kent got involved and somewhat violent in town, resulting in national guard deployment. may 4th, students gathered for a scheduled peaceful protest, army showed up to disperse them and they chased each other until the army, with no warning, turned and fired on the protestors.

              https://wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_Hat_Riot.
And then a few days later, hundreds of students and teachers protested this event in NYC.
Thousands of workers in the area then attacked the protestors and rioted throughout the city in retaliation.
The police formed a barrier to prevent the workers from reaching the students, but when this was breached, they gave up and allowed the rioters to attack the students/teachers.

The mayor called out the police for not attempting to stop the violent workers, and three days later the workers began their own protests against the ‘commie’ mayor.

The president later appointed the main guy leading these counter protests as his labor secretary.

              Just typical american shit.

You Americans need to stop blaming yourselves for what your “leaders” do. Your nation has always been a false democracy with false freedoms. Everyone else around the world knows America is full of shit when it talks about such things. And they don’t get to vote on what foreign policy America will adopt. What you’re experiencing now is that foreign policy turned domestic.

This is so true, it’s exactly how the American regime has been conducting itself around the world for decades. They have just now turned it on us. I think it’s because people started talking about Bernie and socialized medicine and universal healthcare and it looked like we might actually do something about it for a second there.

It’s more so because not enough people didn’t do their part to oppose fascism at the ballot.

Republicans didn’t have that much control over the state and local election rules at the time.

So no you don’t get to hand weave personal-responsibility away from those who did nothing that day.

I really hate this type of rhetoric, not dissimilar to the cringe af “vote blue no matter who”. It really ignores the decades long malicious attack on american consciousness itself, on truth and history. The American people are disenfranchised from political thought and economic action by design. Im not sure how much voting in america even matters at this point, the dnc capitulated HARD to fascists during the election, as is their historical prerogative (to defend capital interest), blaming the citizens just seems meaningless at this point. At a certain point you have to admit this is just what liberal democracy degenerates to every time.

That’s Implying they think both parties are “just as bad”

It’s the worst take anarchists have. You use every tool in the box not completely abandoned an important one such as voting ceding all ground to maga candidates playing right into the hands of Trump.

You can demand for electoral reform, read independent journalism, protest, support unions, join cooperatives and only buy from companies that don’t contribute to political parties just as a few listed examples.

VBNMW is cringe to a whole lot more people than just “anarchists”. It doesn’t just speak to voter participation, it speaks to a sense of entitlement that Democratic politicians have. It reminds me of Hillary’s “It’s her turn” slogan.

Democrats are, in almost every situation, the better choice. Political junkies know that, but most people aren’t political junkies. We criticize the Democratic sense of entitlement because we know how it comes off to regular voters. It’s political malpractice to constantly display that kind of entitlement. That slogan needs to die.

First-past-the-post is litterally the problem you have with American democracy, it’s intentionally designed to only work for 2 competitors in an election race.

You’re not going to have a better democrat party unless you force them to face actual competition with elections under the single-transferable vote they would quickly improve their act facing small parties and independents winning seats. Portland uses this system already for their elections.

Americans need to stop accepting just 2 choices when they deserve more and better.

Absolutely true and entirely useless on a national scale right now. FPTP is what we have and it’s the system in which we must elect candidates who will move us to a better system. Primaries are where the game has to be played right now, and for that we need to kill the notion that loyal Democrats shouldn’t criticize sitting Democrats.

Portland is not politically typical. It can be a model, but it has to be a model for political culture before it can be a model for how to enact a better voting system.

with elections under the single-transferable vote

While FPTP is trash, that system is kinda trash, too: if a candidate would beat all others 1-on-1 (Condorcet winner), then should that candidate win? Not according to single transferable vote/instant run-off.

                  Example
                  • A > B > C: 2
                  • C > B > A: 2
                  • B > C > A: 1

Who wins according to instant run-off? C. Who wins against every opponent 1-on-1? B.

                  Other methods also fail.

There are better methods: this nice table compares voting methods by a wide range of properties.

It most definitely is not convenient. The establishment is plagued by weakness and committed to maintaining that culture.

While I’m arguing this, I’m also arguing against a 3rd party edgelord. It’s really hard to say who is more insane, people who want to go 3rd party in a FPTP system, or people who think the Democratic establishment is competent at running elections.

Even though most Americans don’t know or don’t care about any of this, the other side would have still won if they just asked the voters who they want.

But that wasn’t an option, by design. Because the other side would rather lose than win with someone they can’t control. And any other option is unavailable, by design.
