I don’t think either of you are wrong, tbh. I don’t think they’re completely wrong because it seems like, time and time again, the most outspoken homophobes tend to be caught engaging in homosexual acts themselves. At the same time, however, it feels kinda dismissive and like it’s shifting the blame.
Like, “this could have been avoided if the poor man was just able to freely express himself”.
No, there’s no guarantee that would have happened, and regardless, he still (presumably) burned down their house, dug up their dog’s bones, put the dog’s remains on display, and then murdered the victim, all because they were gay. That’s absolutely disgusting and it doesn’t matter if the murderer was closeted gay or not, he’s still a disgusting inhuman creature who went above and beyond to cause someone as much pain and grief as possible.
