DC is planning to phase out it’s only line of streetcars and replace them with electric buses.
They cite double parking as one of the reasons to switch to buses. Why not just make fines for parking in a position that blocks public transit scale to a person’s wealth? I’d imagine that’d change the tune of these idiots real quick if the city took a percentage of your annual income instead of some low $ fine that rich people consider the cost of parking anywhere.
So if a rich person has a chauffeur park on the tracks, does the chauffeur have to pay a percentage of their salary as fines?
Or an Uber driver grabbing a gig for a billionaire?
Parking fines, which is what your proposal essentially is, are a regressive tax, in most cases.
Those are pretty good loopholes tbh. Vehicles that repeatedly violate the offence should just be seized by the city if there’s a need to close the loophole.
I’m not saying this is a perfect solution, but fuck I’d love to see some accountability for the people who make a negative impact on society because they are selfish pricks.
So they want to keep the overhead wires for charging, smart.
They’re dismissive of issues with level boarding. They’re spending limited budget on changing what works to try to expand instead of delaying expansion until the next funding round.
The planned demise of the current DC Streetcar line is sad because, like many US cities, DC has a long history of extensive streetcar lines that have faded away over time. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streetcars_in_Washington,_D.C.
