Despite the supposed “air gapped” setup, I find it highly questionable to throw money at a US company for such a critical infrastructure, which will then be used behind the scenes by the US government to finance campaigns against Europe’s integrity. In addition, they are making themselves dependent on support from an American company.

Is it? What do you mean by that?

Kommun workers use Windows or iOS. University workers use mainly Windows or iOS, though computer labs usually have Linux PCs. Still, the unis usually have their email service managed via Outlook or Gmail services. We have our own data storage, though, e.g., KTH still buys OneDrive. Similarly, we have our own computing clusters, and here, luckily, I have never heard of any Swedish researcher using AWS or anything like that.

Germany is a huge supporter of Open Source development with https://www.sovereign.tech/. Ministries are quite autonomous and in this case the defence ministry made a dumb decision. Doesn’t surprise me that this ministry in particular is not led by the brightest people.

With VMware Broadcom hiking up prices for the “DIY” clouds, then a contract like this to supply & maintain the equipment is probably the best they can get.

What other ( EU ) on-prem cloud providers are supported by SAP?

Doesn’t OVH support SAP ? I’m sure they could help the German military create a data center for themselves if needed

Welcome to Merz. Germany was working on separating themselves from US software until Trump’s greatest fan became Chancellor.

    Edit WAS working. Fuck SwiftKey.

Merz certainly cannot be expected to work against US monopolies — on the contrary. The man is more of a professional lobbyist and, among other things, was chairman of the supervisory board of Black Rock Germany until 2020—he is a walking conflict of interest.

Exactly. The things we need are contrary to his beliefs. Healthcate, affordable homes and food for all are socialist ideas.

Vote theleft in local elections and join a union.

Yeah, but it’s only the coins. You’d understand what pain is after a German pegs you in the head without a €2 coin 🤕
