Cardiff City Council has announced they will not be mowing grassland in 144 sites across the city all summer, as an extension of their “No Mow May” campaign. The continuation of this initiative aims to help wildlife thrive, after it was discovered that approximately 97% of flower-rich meadows have been lost since the 1930s, and with them, vital food and habitat needed by wildlife.
Cardiff Council joined the campaign for the month of May this year, and has now announced it will be extending this practice until the end of the summer.
A spokesperson for Cardiff Council said: “To help support nature there will be no mow until September again this year at 144 different sites across the whole city, covering an area of grass the size of 272 football pitches.”
People: We dont want rates to go up.
Council: ok we will cut down the amount of times we mow to save money, it also happenes to be good for bird life, bees and such.
People: we want low rates but we want the city council to mow!
People: this sucks. I’m voting reform next time. let them bring mister musk over to destroy all our public services. i’ll still not get my nearby verges mown but at least i’ll have worked to harm those who denied me and hurt my feelings.
I am, and I do the same following my mom’s example. She moved in a new house…First year her neighbors looked displeased at her garden. The second year they asked her why she never maintained it. The third year everyone stood at the borders pointing out plants the had not seen in town for ages. It’s truly amazing the things you see in your garden. Also each year has become more diverse. Yes, September mowing isn’t always fun, but it’s SO worth it!!!
People that are complaining need to get a grip
Ive done this for the last for years with the front patch of grass. You can tell it irritates the neighbours with their manicured lawn thats basically a green desert. We had frogs hopping around last year so yeah its worth it.
The council where I live, started imposing fines to people that didn’t mow loads in the summer because it was ‘encouraging rats and other vermin’. Now they have been forced to U-turn as it is great for everything except a few moaners to leave it growing. Councils are idiots with nothing else to do.
Whatever you do, people will be unhappy.
I’ve been trying to explain to my bf the ecological benefits of doing this. He keeps mowing when I’m not around.
It’s public property. If you hate it so much mow it yourself.
I don’t think that’s how public property works but that’s how I think it should work.
