      Every time I try to play with guinea pigs they always scatter and hide. I wish they were more playful and affectionate.

        They are but the prey instincts to run from hand overpower their logic brain

        If you have them out on lap or chest then they will cuddle

          They are highly food motivated, which can be exploited, even unintentionally. Our two have us well trained to provide nibbles, so crinkling of plastic can draw them out of hiding. But yeah, still prey animals with a strong run-and-hide drive.
