I appreciate that they didn’t kill the game. If people are still paying for it, and presumably making even a little profit, it’s probably not that hard to keep it running.

Too, I don’t really know how I’ll feel if/when FFXIV ever shuts down. I have had a character now since 2.0, and I would be very sad to see them go. I imagine it’s the same for some folks who have been playing 11 for 20 years.

    I loved this game.

I would love to start playing it again. This is the kind of thing I want a remaster of. Give me more FFXI.

Same, but given the time sink I’d like an abridged experience. I heard they doing that with DQX so why not FFXI?

I’m pretty sure you love the community, not necessarily the game.

      It does not hold up.

      Ffxiv is pretty fun though

No, I actually liked FFXI better than FFXIV. I played XI for a couple years but I couldn’t get into XIV.

The game has effectively been in maintenance mode for some time. That being said I’m glad it still exists. I unsubbed a little over a year ago, but the idea that it’s still there waiting for me makes me happy.

I actually logged in just this week - there’s a free login campaign right now for those who are inactive, so it’s a good chance to scope things out.

Imagine if they actually did shut it down last year, the same year FFXIV had an expansions with tons of 11 references and even a raid series based on it.

    Ending meaning

with the game shifting into a so-called maintenance mode, where only system upkeep would be performed.

So not really pulling the plug, just no new story developments and updates

I kind of want to dive in for a month just to see if I remember anything about it. I played it on PC back when it dropped in 2003, so 22 years ago. It was the first MMO I really got into and so I would love to see if I remember the world at all if I set it up today.

Thanks! What makes it so bad? Doesn’t run well? I would absolutely like to try it if it means no monthly payment, and it’s basically the same game. I just wanted to see it and mess around for a few hours.

It runs pretty well and everything and I think will scratch the itch.

It’s just a very jarring throwback to the times.

The game was more built around being ran with a controller, so mouse and keyboard is a little janky - I pretty much solely use a keyboard.

Map/travel is very old school. Alt tabbing for maps/routes, boats, etc.

Making a player level to 20, and then immediately starting over to level again for a sub job is an incredibly sadistic thing to ask from an MMO.

I could go on. But it regularly sees 2k+ players online so there must be some subset of people that enjoy it.

Same. I spent about three months deep in the game, and then I realized how steep the grind was and stopped playing it. It was neat though, so it would be fun to check it out again and see what has changed in over 20 years.

I remember that as well. You absolutely needed to be in a complete party just to tackle regular areas. I saw in the notes they have been focusing on allowing single player runs work better since I’m sure finding a party is probably close to impossible these days.

So I was on a personal mission to beat every mainline FF game a couple years ago. For 14 I considered “beat” to mean be up to date with the story (which I was doing anyway), and for 11 I wanted to at least complete the story that the game shipped with simply because I didn’t want to sink TOO much time into it.

Anyway, you are able to get from 1-50 and kill the Shadowlord on your own now. I can attest to that. And after doing that I have now successfully finished FF1-16!

On my server there were still plenty of people. I don’t know how many are gold bot farmers. But there was still lots of characters running around.

I like turn based because I like not having to panic decide and button mash.

Some of the FF stories are so good. Some of them get convoluted and weird but the early games, 6-10, have some of the best stories in gaming. Stuff that will make you cry.

I think some of the games have options to switch between realtime and turn based. Especially newer games like the FF remake, but I’m not 100% certain. Haven’t played them.

I love ffxii. I love the seamless gameplay, even the gambits. XIII ruined the fighting for me and I remember them advertising it as real time combat or something like that. XIII already did that, and so much better.

I got into it for the first time back around this last December/January. I was amazed how active the community still is. I didn’t even play on the most populated English server, and chat was always active. Sidenote: There’s only a quasi-global chat thru Yelling while in cities, you have to join Linkshells for more consistent chatting (that game’s version of guilds, and yes you can have more than one linkshell at a time).

As for the gameplay itself: It’s a very clunky game, and it’s very slow. But, that’s part of the charm when compared to today’s MMOs where everything is designed for instant gratification. Fortunately, there are tons of add-ons the community has made to enable some Quality of Life features, such as updated HD textures, a minimap, auto-inventory manager and sorter, etc. I got to around level 70 after about 6sh weeks/120 hours of game time, until my annual MMO interest dried up. I might dive back into it again next year whenever the MMO itch hits again.

Supposedly Square was working on a remaster of the game back around 2018, but it got scrapped a couple of years into development. Which is a shame, because the game with some modern UI sensibilities and graphics would be really nice (as long as they didn’t change hardly anything of the core gameplay).

Overall, it was nice/kind of sad to see it still had a lot more depth than FF14, which I consider to be very watered down nowadays even compared to its 2.0 re-release. But again, for anyone considering trying it out: It is a slow game, and it has alllll the jank of a 2003-era MMO. Just getting it installed and your account setup is janky, so make sure you watch a video before even attempting it.

Yeah, I played it for the first time in the last couple of years, too.

And I enjoyed the game more than I expected to. It’s a lot slower, like you said, than FFXIV for example, but that’s OK.

I agree that I’d love a bit of a remake that just made a few things more streamlined like linking up attacks with my trust party - which I found to be often nearly impossible to do, even with mods.

I’ve been curious about the story since they released the current alliance raid series in FFXIV which is a FFXI crossover. Would love to try it if there was some kind of combined subscription.

I’ve been wanting this for YEARS. It’d give you something to do between content patches if you’re a no-lifer like me.
