Problem with bluesky is this: The only people who use bluesky over twitter are doing so for political reasons. People uninvolved in politics generally stay on twitter because it has a way, way bigger reach than any alternative. Unfortunately, the politics of bluesky users are somewhere between Kamala Harris and John Oliver.

If I want an echo chamber for my politics I go on hexbear. Twitter is like gazing into the abyss but at least the abyss has a few bangers every now and then.

10 years ago the appeal was you could interact with famous people like you were rattling a stick on the bars of a human zoo. My favorite thing online used to be Trent Reznor’s unhinged 2am rants about Courtney Love or some record executive.

Now yes if you’re a well adjusted person and not a feral hooting goblin like me, Twitter has no appeal

I swear twitter was born because someone noticed that the comments under news articles were only ever reacting to the headline and not the article itself; therefore, cut the chaff had have a website where you can only post and communicate in headlines, no articles required.

Narcissists tend to need / want a great deal of constant praise and affirmation, as well as a high level of either real or perceived general social status / popularity.

twitter for some, I imagine, is because whenever they spout asinine nonsense in real life people ignore it or tell them to fuck off. For others though, I believe it’s because they really like to rate dogs.

Main thing for me was just getting updates from youtubers on when videos would drop and shit. Other appeal was just like “joke” accounts where the user would pretend to be a character or post OC of some kind. And there was some that just posted interesting shit like old ads or random “perfect” movie frames. The changes since Musk took over has basically killed those tho. And then there was just the whole appeal of microblogging where if you actually cared about what someone had to say about a movie or whatever or some random thought they had. So friends but also celebrities and stuff. It made sense. But now it’s just a very different sort of site. It’s a “content” site, everyone churning out “content” for “engagement”

Yeah for sure - I briefly had an account when it first came out - and it quickly lost appeal for me (same with fb and other social media). So I literally haven’t touched any of it, and joke like I have a high horse, but really I’m just stressed out by electronic social connection

If it wasn’t for the amount of artists and leftist brazilians in there, I probably wouldn’t be using Bluesky. And good thing I follow some actual good english speaking users too, otherwise it probably would be a lib shithole for me. I can only hope more federated social media gets popular. Maybe I should make a mastodon account.

the unsolicited fetish art part is so true lol from the first time I logged on, it was pretty much always a deviantart highlight reel of semi-naked buff humanoid animals and anime booba, which was actually good because then I chose the much healthier and less Skinner-boxish option of only seeing posts by people I follow

I finally had to drop twitter due to Nazis. One may think that I would naturally gravitate to bluesky where I already have an account, but it turns out I’d rather just be bored.

Wait do they have notifications now?

The only real value for twitter-like apps for me is getting updates by individuals and organisations on when shit is happening. When the next video is gonna drop, when the next event is, other random news etc. Only reason I started using it in the first place.

Bluesky not having those features makes it pretty worthless. It’s also not a great feed to just kind of endlessly scroll through, twitter is better for that.
