    Oh I’m familiar with the paradox of tolerance, but it is not a consensus view that banning intolerant viewpoints is a good idea. Lynching and explicit calls for violence are plainly illegal and i dont defend them. However the KKK (to the extent that it even exists anymore) does not do those things, at least not officially. The ACLU famously defended the KKKs right to speak in public.
    Assuming you’re talking about America, the erosion of the constitution is a serious concern but we are far from being fascist (case in point, we are having this conversation without fear of retribution).
    Canada “gets along fine” in the sense that they have fewer immigrants than the US or Europe so demographic tensions are not as acute. But there is sure as hell racism and xenophobia there as well. Meanwhile in Europe, with much heavier restrictions on speech, there is I would argue more racism and xenophobia than the US.
