It is 14:05 p.m. of 10-05-2025 here, and I am accessing their statement from India without using any tools to bypass censorship. Can’t verify if any censorship of any kind was involved here earlier. The Wire’s statement reads :

    > The Wire’s Statement on the Government Blocking Access to Its Website

‘We protest this blatant censorship at a critical time for India when sane, truthful, fair and rational voices and sources of news and information are among the biggest assets that India has.’

On May 9, 2025, readers of The Wire across India found that they were unable to access thewire.in – the website for the English portal of The Wire. At least two Internet Service Providers posted a message that the website had been blocked on Government orders. The following is The Wire’s statement on the issue.

    §

    Dear Readers of The Wire,

In a clear violation of the Constitutional guarantee of freedom of the press, the Government of India has blocked access to thewire.in across India.

The internet service providers are saying multiple things. We have learnt it is per orders of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

We protest this blatant censorship at a critical time for India when sane, truthful, fair and rational voices and sources of news and information are among the biggest assets that India has.

We are taking all necessary steps to challenge this arbitrary and inexplicable move.

Your support has kept our work going for the past 10 years and we are counting on all of us standing together at this time.

We will not be deterred from providing truthful and accurate news to all our readers.

    Satyamev jayate.

So here’s the thing. The government did order ISPs to block thewire.in, bur Indians bring Indians, except for a few ISPs everyone was too slow to follow the order. It was even accessible from BSNL. And by now the government has already unblocked the website. So, all in all, it was nothing more than a massive farce in the end.
