I’ve played through Terraria. I like Stardew Valley way more as well. Both games scratch certain itches for me but SDV scratches way more of them and way more variety.

Emotional, musical, technical, optimization, engineering, planning, combat. I would say neither game has great combat. Terraria is a bit better for the technical platforming and character control. But SDV overall is just a lot better in terms of music, story, immersiveness, attachment, and the feeling of accomplishment.

SDV is still the only game I’ve ever played that changed what I want to do with my life. That’s pretty special!

Go spend a month out there before you make any big changes. Rural life is super romanticized in the media, but in reality it’s pretty boring and there’s a bunch of meth and bigots.

There’s also a constant stream of work. As my grandma always says: “there’s always something that needs doing”. Also, if you have animals, you can’t take a day off, let alone taking a week-long holiday because who’s gonna take care of them?

Unless you move there just to live somewhere calm and not do any of the countryside stuff, in which case, yeah… uber boredom, nothing to do other than what you normally do at home in an apartment.

Yeah, I moved to the country in 9th grade. I went from a school where my class was about 1k kids, to one that was about 150 kids, to a graduating class of 28.

I lived on a farm and goat dairy, and there’s a good reason I got a degree in information technology. Although I still have to go help my mom with stuff a few times a month.

It’s definitely not fun when doing literally anything is a 30+ mile round trip, and that trip is to a town with a Walmart and a few restaurants.

The ideal town size is around 100k people. There’s not a ton of people so traffic isn’t awful, but there’s still plenty of stuff to do.

The only plus is that I have 21 acres to grow food on when society collapses.

It’s the same when call of duty makes kids yearn to go to Ukraine combat zone. Pure insanity right here. Imagine some innocent farmer hearing some city dweller be like ‚I played this game stardew valley you know’

I played with friends and always got frustrated. You can’t just fuck around and discover new stuff. It kind of works like that right at the beginning and that’s a lot of fun. Id say it works right until after you beat skeletron or maybe when you first go to hell, but if you want to get far at all it turns into a “wiki game” where everyone has to have the terraria wiki open in another window to learn where they have to farm to get the next good armor.

I find most of the boss battles unsatisfyingly hard, but I actually think it’s a little bit more “chill” than Stardew, for just hanging out an growing/building stuff. I don’t have to worry about birthdays or 2am passing out. But, I guess you do have to fortify against goblin/pirate invasions after a while.

I agree the Terraria doesn’t have a hook for the player, really. You have to explore to find out what there is at all. Stardew does at least introduce you to the main activities, while still rewarding exploration.

I have more time in Stardew, and have never beaten Terraria. But, I haven’t played the most recent versions of either.

Same. It feels like an arbitrary mashup of several other games, without capturing the magic of any of those games. Also kind of feels like the “default demo game” for a generic game engine. Its kind of got no soul. It’s a Roblox situation. I know lots of people adore it but I’d infinitely rather be playing Minecraft or Noita or another game with some true novelty.

It is a combat focused game, where the progression is beating different bosses to unlock new enemies, ores, weapons etc. Way more items than Minecraft, a lot of mechanics aswell.

Give it a go, defeat Wall of Flesh in the Underworld, and then the true game begins.

A lot more content with big mods like Calamity.

I like how in Journey mode you can unlock infinite replication for every block or item by sacrificing enough of them. The concept of giving up potential power now in return for a huge payout later intrigues me. I just wish it was more balanced with higher costs or a cooldown or something, since certain items break the game when you can spam them endlessly even if they’re several steps behind in the equipment progression chain.

          Same.
I like it because it solves my kleptomania hoarding disorder urge to collect everything in case I need it later.

Thinking back to the old equivalent exchange mod for Minecraft, maybe the solution is to allow conversion of all items to some currency, and then locking the conversion from that currency back to items in the same way as journey mode. Converting would be done in the same place as researching, maybe researching could even give diminished currency.

The lore explanation is that you need to take apart items to understand them, after which you can assemble them and disassemble them efficiently.
Magic cannot be assembled, which is why enchanted weapons revert to their normal variants. Any item causing problems when convertible can be blocked for being “too magical” to assemble.

I really whish this was a thing now.

They have the semi official tmodloader which has workshop support for mods. Steam cloud saves are supported.

And why would you expect an older game to have these features?

              semi official is not official.

steam cloud saves are supported on PC.

              14 years is enough time.

TModLoader is as official as we can get. Re-Logic supports them and on the official monthly news about the game, TModLoader is always mentioned and the devs, that work on TModLoader talk about what they’ve done. There’s no point in changing the game to support modding, when there’s already a separate and free app to do it.

What other cloud saves would you want?

Crossplay is coming… at some point. They’ve been working on it for a long time and getting decently close, I think, I don’t remember exactly. Should come out in the future though.
