This winter respiratory season was rough, we were getting RSV that normally have a course of 5 to 6 days for babies then recovery. No need for older than 2 to be hospitalized unless they had eczema/asthma (theyre usually related). Then this year they’d hit a second burst of it and have to go BACK on hiflow around 8 days and stay for 10, and older were getting hospitalized for RSV which is nuts.

Also lots of superinfections. Way more kids getting RSV AND Flu A, or mycoplasm AND flu A. Last year it was IGAS and flu B that was kicking people’s asses (like a normal healthy adult to ICU in 24 hours) but it wasn’t common. This year everybody we saw inpatient peds had 2 infections or more.

Another thing I’ve noticed and the older nurses noticed is there’s a wave of newly diagnosed diabetics in DKA a few weeks after a big covid spike, and very dirty appendicitis (dirty as in needs a drain and a few days of IV antibiotics).

Jesus that is fucking grim. I more or less expected this was happening to some degree, but the difference between those two Pearson correlation coefficient charts is about as stark as it gets.

I’ll never be shamed into not masking. I’m constantly being pathologized and/or pitied for masking and avoiding high-risk scenarios by the people in my life (with a tiny minority of fellow maskers who keep me sane), but my determination has only gotten stronger the more data we get. It’s only going to get worse from here, especially in the States.
