Even though I care not for the spud, after Trump and the shenanigans about stolen elections, I am proud that I live somewhere where elections are called and there is some basic civility around the gracious defeat speech then the victory speech. This might be the bottle of bubbly talking…

It was a nice change from what I’ve been hearing.

Was interesting seeing how much the states swung. It was originally projected by the media that they were going to get a minority government but instead they took 14 seats from the libs.

Not as close as I thought it was going to be.

We’ll miss Antony Green. What a legend.

I guess Casey Briggs got a test run during Covid when people were calling him “the Antony Green of death”, and he’ll be good, but it won’t be the same.

It’s great to have got the libs out.

But I still feel uneasy. In addition to Cheeto Chaplin’s attacks the UK recently ruled that trans women legally aren’t women and are banned from women’s bathrooms, and so of course in Australia there have been recent protests against trans people and against anti-hate speech laws protecting LGBTIA+.

The arsetrumpet catchphrase about not needing to be welcomed to your “own country” (it’s not white peoples country) led to it being shouted and booed at an Indigenous elder speaking at an Anzac service.

There’s also been a lot of anti-immigration sentiments being fomented and backlash against harm reduction like injecting rooms. Even with the election over that has to have stirred a certain element up.

Regardless of laws Australia picks up culture wars like a sponge.

Also on a personal level there are groups that I can’t form community and solidarity with past an ideological level due to the credible risk of harm to me. 😐 I both support harm minimisation but can’t do irl outreach like volunteering with people who have been intimidating me, stealing from me and trying to break into my house.

I could lobby for methadone to be subsidised to try and reduce the desperation and crime in my area but I don’t have the resources for activism, particularly the organised kind. I’m barely keeping myself and puss alive.

And the left loves eating itself. I’m hesitant to get involved with any of the groups even if I was well enough. Purity spirals I’ve experienced in the past actually led to me distancing myself for a long time and it seems to be kicking up again.

Also marginalised groups I’m trying to be an ally to online (according to actions they’ve said they want) are locked in a defensive stance, reacting with suspicion and shade.

No idea what I could even do that wouldn’t be derided as performative and tokenistic

I’m trying. I already have been. It doesn’t seem to help much.

Edit: There’s also the additional bonus of it marking you out as an easy target. I also belong to multiple marginalised groups

It sucks arse. I have so little structural power and ability to advocate for myself - it’s a struggle to survive. I have no idea how to help anyone else.

Fascinating watching the abc at the moment, the libs won’t own up to their mistakes and talk crap.

    It’s honestly embarrassing.

Bill shorten is absolutely wrecking Palmer and the liberal lady who looks like an off brand Celine Dion.

The libs are such sore losers it’s not even funny. They literally think Aussies are mugs and we should feel privileged to be ruled by them.

It’s almost mean to subject them to the Sarah Ferguson/ Laura Tingle double act. But it’s very entertaining. And a reminder that good journalism is important to hold these self-important wankers to account.

Majority government is good, they might actually get some shit done. The LNP will be very weak, like in Vic, which isn’t actually great for democracy going forward, but maybe it’ll convince them that they need to be less super right wing and they’ll ultimately end up as a more moderate party. Maybe.

Victoria needs a new second party, would be nice to have a Vic only party instead of another federal organisation in Victoria.

I was more involved with them last election, I ended up being booth captain at one of the sites. Everything was pretty chill and they all seemed good. I’ve only dropped off because I had the boys.

A moderate party that is as pro infrastructure as Labour would be more successful as an opposition.

Things have been going almost comically far right with the Libs in recent years so I hope this is finally the wake up call for them (although tbh I’d rather hope they die and there’s more smaller parties that rise up from the ashes)

Agree, a democracy needs a competent opposition to keep government accountable, regardless of which side is in power. I hope the libs choose someone more centrist and less thug for the next leader. I feel like their party has become stacked with more extreme right wingers over the last decade so probably unlikely.

As I said earlier, voters are never wrong. They can’t be.

If the far right bull isn’t something voters respond to, they’ll have to change if they ever want to win those votes back

Well it’s done. I didn’t have to wait as long as I thought for the result. I was thinking Labour would win, but thought it would be a narrower result. I can rest easy tonight, and hopefully wake up to news Dutton has lost his seat.
