Didn’t realize that until I got a house. I can only imagine the disaster that was in my apartment dishwashers when I left.

You’re also supposed to change your oil filter and furnace filter 2-4 times per year, I guess. I deal with all three once per year and they have rarely blown up on me.

Everyone reading this with a dishwasher, go and do this job whenever is best convenient over the next 24h

Basically no one does it frequently enough and you’ll be kicking yourself for not doing it sooner after the next wash

Yes, because in my experience the typical response to this topic every time it comes up is, “What filter?”

Just wait until we tell everyone you’re supposed to regularly clean the built up lint out of your dryer duct, as well.

I tried to clean the filter in my dishwasher after having had it for a year or so… unscrewed a bunch of stuff trying to find it… ultimately turned to the internet for answers. Like why is this so goddamned difficult?

Turns out, some of them now (I bought this one about 10 years ago, it’s midrange at best) don’t have them, they have macerators, sort of like a tiny garbage disposal inside the dishwasher.

So that question isn’t always wrong.

I always find it fascinating that you guys still have dryer ducts, here in the Netherlands we only have condensation dryers since the last ten years or so. Newest is heat pump dryers which are also condensing, though I’m still not sure they are actually more energy efficient.

Not only that, but a depressing plurality of people also still have gas fired dryers and water heaters. These are ducted as well because they obviously absolutely must vent to the outside.

My filter is somehow always empty. I don’t understand where all the food goes. It’s not like I clean off all my plates perfectly before putting them on there.

I just disassembled mine to replace the drain pipe because the stupid plastic they use splits over time.

Why not make them out of rubber and wouldn’t have a problem for years
