PewDiePie made a video on why he installed Linux and explained why everyone should do it too. Due to his number of followers, this might be the year of the Linux Desktop? Hooray?
PewDiePie? Is that really the guy’s name? Is that Slavic or something?
His name is Felix, PewDiePie is just his yt handle.
You know he’s a Linux user because tells everyone he uses Linux without being asked.
That’s how we know he isn’t a Tool fan.
As a Tool fan I can tell you that you are correct.
Installing Linux was a good decision.
I have not gone back to Microsoft Windows.
Don’t listen to people telling you it’s hard. I don’t have an IT degree or engineering degree. Installing it was easy. Linux is elegant, secure and powerful. I love it.
If you don’t use many devices it’s fine.
What do you mean? I’ve never had any issues with multiple devices. They’re… Just different devices.
I don’t know if this is what they meant, but what’s stopping me from fully switching is that I have a bunch of peripheral devices with windows-only drivers
Many of them work without having to install anything. You could try a live boot USB and see what of them doesn’t work to get an idea how difficult it’ll be.
(possibly needless) anecdote
My dad is a Windows “power user” and it’s funny trying to talk to him about Linux because there are so many things unique to Windows that were essentially OS problems foisted onto “power users” that he is concerned about and a lot of them don’t really apply (e.g. anti-virus, drive letters, installing drivers for everything, etc.).
TBH I kinda like the whole “drive letter” thing. But I also understand mount points, so I don’t really miss it, but still. It’s nice to have one single window to see all of your internal & external drives, home folders, and network shares. And yes, I’m aware I can do this in Linux as well. Just needs extra configuration - which is not a bad thing.
Nautilus shows me that stuff next to each other out of box on Ubuntu. It just doesn’t have drive letters.
Or rely on software that is not available in Linux and can’t be emulated, which unfortunately applies to both my work and personal use
Work should supply you with a managed device. That’s out of your control.
I’m genuinely curious though - what ‘personal use’ software do you run that isn’t supported in Linux?
It’s exactly this. There are SteamOS-like systems out there (Bazzite and CachyOS) but it’s a pain if you don’t know what you’re doing. Needless to say, Enterprises will be using Windows for a very long time since they can easily restrict software and such - and a lot of their software is Windows-based only.
Yeah every thread is basically “lol bro just use Linux, skill issue”… I’m very comfortable with Linux, shell scripting and all those things. Been doing is almost 30 years. There are a wide range of things that are just not supported, which makes it a non-starter for a lot of people.
I wanted to give new life to an old acer laptop/tablet hybrid. I installed Linux, but the webcam and microphone just won’t work no matter what. The power button also doesn’t work.
There’s still a long way to go before any casual user would accept this.
Your edge case is not indicative of a larger trend.
I have 2 servers, 6 containers, a raspi, a desktop, and a laptop all running linux just fine. My two phones send notification updates to my laptop via kde connect
I have lots of devices on linux and they all play nice together
I have, we’re a multi-OS houshold. Linux, Steam Deck, Windows, MacOS, iOS, Android.
Different tools for different purposes. You wouldn’t have just one kind of screwdriver, right?
No.
But if I only need a specific screwdriver cause none other fit these screws, it costs $200 and plays ads while I hold it, then I’ll use different screws instead.I get having Linux and Windows, after all you need a backup solution for when you can’t use Linux. But why do you also have a Mac?
Then I guess iOS makes sense if you have a Mac, but why also have Android?
Linux = Freedom, customizability MacOS = Usability Windows = ???
Windows for interoperability.
Try job hunting without a Windows machine. Good luck!
(My wife hates it when she hits websites that don’t work properly and starts swearing, then I ask “Are you using a real browser or just Safari?” - “FUCK YOU!” Somehow we’re still married. 😀)
Firefox with user agent switcher extension. Problem solved.
Try job hunting without a Windows machine. Good luck!
I don’t have any problem job hunting on a Linux box. Why would that matter?
Are you using a real browser or just Safari?
I used to do web development, Safari is honestly worse then IE6
It’s godawful, so many things don’t work in Safari and it’s because Apple can’t stand other people coming up with “standards”. :)
Can you fullscreen windows under MacOS yet?
Unless I misunderstand, you’ve been able to do that since around 2011.
I don’t even know whether I understand I just hear MacOS users griping about fullscreen, and a quick google gave quite recent results. Especially with fullscreen being incompatible with other windows on top (each fullscreen window necessary is on its own workspace) which would be highly annoying in Blender. You can configure blender to have file open dialogues, render results etc. in its main window, but certain stuff like preferences always open a second one.
My wife is an Apple fangirl. :) She has the watch too!
I admire the perpetual Linux optimism but man if I could make money betting against you I would (I’d feel a little evil about it, but I need the cash).
When corporate slop all around us is continuing to thrive despite lower and lower quality products and receiving government support now too, to think the big money makers will somehow lose traction in a meaningful way to open source enthusiasm is niave imo.
I’m not even sure Taylor swift could make Linux happen this year, nevermind this racist dirt bag.
I feel like the GUI’S and user experience have barely changed in the last ten years since I started using linux. You still need to use the terminal for basic things like installing WiFi drivers when your distro didn’t automarically install it and smooth scrolling on a trackpad has been garbage for years.
Needing to fiddle to install basic drivers on a 2012 macbook air is kinda unacceptable in this day and age. I had to pull put a USB Ethernet jack and go through three updates and restarts for the drivers to finally pop up. I like tinkering so I don’t mind, but a regular person with basic computer skills would have no clue what to do.
NO MY WALLED GARDEN ANTI CONSUMER OVERPRICED APPLE PRODUCT DOESNT HAVE WIFI DRIVERS THIS IS THE FAULT OF THE NERDS THAT FIGHT FOR TECHNOLOGY INDEPENDENCE OF BIG COMPANIES LIKE THE ONE I DECIDED TO INVEST IN WAH WAH
Your laptop may be 13 years old, but Apple is notorious for their walled garden and surely never officially supported Linux on it, or did they? So it’s probably the worst example.
It definitely won’t happen as long as the corporate world is slaved to Microsoft. We actually have a few Linux computers on our domain at work and they’re a pain to administer as are the four Macs that we have.
If he’s doing it I’m inclined not to do it.
His followers aren’t exactly tech savvy so I’m not entirely sure this is going to have much of an effect. Most of his followers are kids who don’t even own computers they just have iPads
lets just say his audience isn’t tech savy. But somehow they try Linux and like it. I think its definitely a win, because even non tech savvy can enjoy Linux.
This might have been partly true 10 years ago. A large majority of his audience is probably adult now.
I was thinking he’s not tech savvy, so he’s doing it for the view. I’ve noticed he’s been trying to come back on the YouTube scene, he’s been largely supplanted by other YouTuber over the years he was gone
Why should we care what a multi-million dollar youtuber uses for an OS? He can afford to build computers for each OS at their highest specs in his range. I’m not going to be brow-beaten by this chump either.
Same reason we have to care about literally anything Trump does or says: he’s influential. Just in this case, it’s a good influence.
Not really. Youtubers are like celebrities. Has PewDiePie done anything significant to help make a better change? No, he hasn’t.
Youtubers are like celebrities
Do you think celebrities aren’t influential? I mean that’s how Trump became President. He had zero prior political experience.
Has PewDiePie done anything significant to help make a better change?
Doesn’t matter if it’s better or worse, the point is that he’s influential. He’s one of the largest YouTubers on the platform. But regardless, I would say that yes, he has, as in the video in the OP. Not just a Linux video, but a positive and comprehensive one.
That’s the point. Guy can choose to get any pc he wants and any OS and chooses to go for Arch Linux and Linux Mint. He will probably start a big movement too.
That’s not what Linux is at all. One of the main advantages of Linux is it can run on bad PCs, look up Raspberri Pis that have 4GB RAM and function flawlessly with Linux(I have one).
It can literally resurrect 10 year old computers.
My 2014 Mac mini server is running Mint. All in all it’s a really nice setup.
Oh, and a 2011 mini that I use to give induction presentations at work.
It can literally resurrect 10 year old computers.
I’ve got a 14-year-old Toshiba that I used in college that runs a weird variant of Ubuntu called Kumander (it’s designed specifically to look and feel like Windows 7, which I think is properly nostalgic for the hardware). As long as you don’t expect the battery to last more than an hour (which about par for the course for a laptop from then) it’s perfectly serviceable as a SOHO-type machine.
Also it can double as a self-defense weapon cause it weighs like 10 lbs.
Also it can double as a self-defense weapon cause it weighs like 10 lbs.
When I was at school they reckoned that I should be in the gifted program so I ended up getting one of the first laptops. This would have been in the very early 1990s and the thing weighed as much as a small whale and was built like a brick. I absolutely used it as a weapon.
It had a grayscale backlit LCD screen. It was seriously a terrible laptop really. It had an interesting mode on it where you could transfer files from it to another computer by plugging it in via a PS2 port, and it would declare itself to be a keyboard and it would just “type” whatever you’d written (of course you lost all formatting). Bit of a useless feature these days but it would have been a godsend back in the early 2000s when transferring files was still quite difficult.
Yeah but you can also run Windows on the modern Raspberry Pi’s.
Mint runs fine on a very old 1GB netbook I recently unearthed.
Bro I know computers with 4GB RAM running Win 11 just fine
I’ve seen Windows 10 run on computers with 8 GB of RAM. I can’t imagine 11 running on just 4 though.
Brother, at that point just put the computer down. Let it go to heaven.
Thats a computer for our class that our professor uses to show slides on the board
That’s 22 minutes of my life. I’ll never get back. But at least it’s interesting that somebody that popular has decided to go to Linux. On second thought, it wasn’t 22 minutes. It was probably more like 10 because I always use 1.5 or 1.75x speed.
Bro, shut the fuck up😊 Nobody cares.
Nazi YouTubers fuck off.
Can we reserve that word for actual Nazis that want to commit genocide, not edgy 15-year old like personalities?
What he did with the sign was arguably very cringe, but it’s pathetic to compare that to someone who actually believes X group of people deserve to die.
If we label everyone a Nazi, the word means nothing and when actual Nazis show up(they are) we’re fucked.
It’s long past being meaningless at this point, other than just a red flag of a toxic individual.
I love my Lemmy client having the ability to label people. I already had you labeled as a Nazi apologist before opening this thread so it tracks to find you saying this here.
Thank you for proving my point.
PewDiePie is the most basic kind of cryptofascist hiding behind a veil of edgy humour and he should not be welcome in the open source community
We reserve it for the “hitler did nothing wrong” crowd.
I don’t care if it’s edgy or ironic or earnest because I have no way to know that. Also, if you fuck goats just to be edgy you’re still a goat fucker.
Cant imagine there are mature minded people that use Lemmy
What did pewdiepie do? Not defending him, I dont follow him at all, and I am just wondering.
You will find two major incidents. The bridge incident where he said the n-word in PUBG and a edgy joke where he tried to see how far Fiverr creators would go and asked for a video of people to write “Hitler did nothing wrong” on a sign. He apologized and condemned the behavior for both.
To me it seems like the source of a lot of the negative quick opinions come from a bad article WSJ did on him.
He’s also promoted the books of fascist talking heads like Jordan Peterson, Ben Shapiro, and Steven Crowder through his book club.
There’s a reason the Christ Church shooter yelled “Subscribe to PewDiePie” besides being a topical meme.
So I read up on it again very briefly because that was ages ago but: The story goes in 2017 he paid an Israeli on Fiverr to dress as Jesus and hold a sign declaring that Hitler did nothing wrong. I have not seen the video so I don’t know for sure, but apparently he wanted to show how far you can take things with Fiverr without any resistance from Freelancers.
I think he did something very wrong to shock his audience for clicks similar to Logan Paul’s disgusting Suicide Forest stunt around that same time and he got a ton of criticism for it. I don’t know what happened afterwards because I’m really not in that bubble but I don’t think a video likes this makes someone a Nazi and the comment above is a bit of a Fediverse knee-jerk reaction to this kind of stuff. I understand why people would still despise him for that though.
This is just the tip of the iceberg, the example that’s easy to cite. Over time in his videos he made a welcoming environment for fascist and hateful groups to feel welcome and at home. The more apt comparison is that if you run a bar, and you don’t kick Nazis out, you own a Nazi bar.
I think you are wrong. He did some mistakes but they were not a tip of an iceberg. I was there watching the videos at that time and I never saw anything that fostered a racist or homophobic environment. He didn’t make specifically anti-racism content and the only LGBTQ related thing he did was offering a different view on the drama related to a queer make up artist.
I suppose we disagree.
I didn’t know about any of this. I don’t like him for completely different reasons and I suspect a lot of people will be like that.
Wasn’t he big into that whole CS go gambling thing? I actually can’t remember when that was that might have been pre-2017
He said the n word a few (maybe even several, by now) years ago. Idk if that makes him a nazi but maybe he did something else I haven’t heard of
Once. The other big controversy was the Fiverr antisemitic joke.
Oh yea I forgot about that one too

I can see some ytbers be nazis, but not him. I know he said the n word, and even if he maybe had some alt right or similar views back in the day, but he is a genuinely good ytber nowadays imo
