The explanation that used to go around was that it was because we started as a lifeboat from a subreddit. Reddit has disproportionately few cis women who are disproportionately likely to only post in female-majority subreddits.
However, it’s been way too long since we were a subreddit for that to still be the reason for the underrepresentation on Hexbear, especially considering that there have been multiple large user influxes since then.
I have some kinda complex thoughts on this, but I think it’s site culture related and there’s been a lot of user pushback to change in that regard.

Damn shame, especially since there was a lot of change since this was a subreddit. For example, getting rid of the r-slur and its proponents made the site better imo
You laugh, but this hits very close to home when your crush starts a conversation about linux distros for programming her model trains and then you vent about it and your gal pal enters the chat to say that she plans installing a dual boot system and which distro she should use for that and then your ex tells you about that vintage French computer she bought that’s somehow linked to transfem culture deep lore. Like, i’m specifically dating the arts and humanities nerds to avoid this kind of stuff because i understand nothing about it and it still keeps happening.
