For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, first up is The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023), the prequel to the hit YA series, following the youthful exploits of Coriolanus Snow, the future dictator of the cartoonishly evil fascist regime ruling North America. He becomes the mentor of a girl chosen for the latest Hunger Games, in which youths from conquered territories must all come together to duel to the death in booby-trapped stadiums before cheering crowds. Director is Francis Lawrence, who did three of the four prior Hunger Games films, also. This received good reviews, so we’ll give it a whirl.

Next is Tokyo Fist (1995), from renowned schlock-auteur Shinya Tsukamoto, the guy behind Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989), which we have not yet watched. In this one, a man who suspects his girlfriend is cheating on him takes up boxing to beat up the guy who he suspects of being the other man. Things escalate from there as he dives straight into a world of bloody toxic masculinity, with a whole lot of fistfighting and gore along the way. Think Japanese Fight Club (1999), but bloodier. High ratings for this across the board, so we’ll watch it.
