    Statist

Oh, Chairman Mao would CERTAINLY be against statism and states and whatnot… a total radical hip anarcho-syndicalist till the day he died.

“Maoists” love Mao the way Christians love Jesus. They don’t. They’re both little guys that live in the brains of their respective worshipers and just happen to agree with all of their opinions. Might as well be fictional characters.

Their tweet reminds me of how important humility is. And by humility, I don’t mean “downplaying your accomplishments” or “putting yourself down”. I mean being real about when your don’t know something or lack the experience.

In context of where the DPRK came from, the history of Korea grappling first with Japanese occupation and then US occupation (which is still ongoing), it is nothing short of amazing how far it has come, effectively under siege.

It is only if you put the DPRK in a vacuum and view it as something that should be flawless and isn’t, that it might be easy to criticize some elements of how it has gone about things. But that is not a sensible way to evaluate socialist projects. They are better praised, criticized, and anywhere between, in the context of their history and present, and this is most often going to be something that people within the lived party context will be able to do effectively, rather than outsiders. Without the context, it fast becomes ivory tower idealizing.

Someone needs to tell that person they don’t need to fill the entire Maoist bingo card in a single tweet.
