Tal Tab Tue 22 Apr 2025

    • Brush: Dogwood Handcrafts Tabak Oridjinal, now with 28 mm Gelousy knot
    • Razor: Koraat – r/Wetshaving exclusive Moarteen (15/16", full hollow, carbon steel)
    • Lather: Mäurer & Wirtz – Tabac Original
    • Post Shave: Mäurer & Wirtz – Tabac Original
    • Fragrance: Mäurer & Wirtz – Tabac Original

I got fed up with how much effort I need to put into getting good lather from veg Tabac with badger and boar brushes (load with a super dry brush for way too long, and then add water in microscopic amounts repeatedly forever or see the lalther turn into a bubbly mess. I was missing tallow Tabac and simultaneously wondering whether I was remembering it with rose-coloured glasses.

So in fetched a backup of pre-2022 Tabac, and went to work with my trusty Gelousy. The difference is stark. The tallow base loads more easily, and is super forgiving when adding water. It just stays dense and takes water like a champ.

I had a great shave with the good old Tabac slickness, and I don’t see myself going back to veg Tabac anytime soon, at least not without a synth.

This makes me wonder: what is it that make some soaps (particularly more bubbly European vegan bases) so much easier to use with a synth than a badger or boar? Or is it just user error and I’m alone with my negative experience?

Good question about synthetic knots. It’s almost like they’re worse at making lather, which makes them better for our purposes. If someone didn’t know any better, they might say badger is better because it makes “more” lather (aka a big bubbly mess).

    04/22/2025

    • Brush: Wolf Whiskers “Gianmaria” w/Maggard 26mm Synthetic

    • Razor: Chiseled Face Legacy Raw Titanium (#69)

    • Blade: Personna P74 (70)

    • Lather: Australian Private Reserve - Raconteur - Soap

    • Post Shave: Brut - Brut - Splash On

    • Post Shave: Nivea - Sensitive - Balm

Despite my increasing comfort with using a straight razor, I didn’t want to risk it before work today. I’m sure eventually I’ll get straight razor shaves that are as good as DE shaves, but I have a little way to go.

I’ve updated my SOTD formatter to track blade use so that’s cool.

    • Blade: GEM PTFE (1)
    • Lather: Mäurer & Wirtz - Tabac - Puck

Haven’t shaved in forever. Thankfully the OCMMOC: The Next Generation is one of the best razors for that problem. Great shave on Tabac Tuesday.

    April 22, 2025

    • Brush: Rad Dinosaur Creations Stars w/ G5C
    • Razor: Yates Merica
    • Blade: Gillette Silver Blue
    • Lather Mike’s Natural Soaps - Orange, Cedarwood, and Black Pepper
    • Post Shave: Catie’s Bubbles - Tonsorial Parlour

Lather was acceptable at best today. Definitely gonna need more practice with it. This seems to be a harder soap and will probably need more water and loading time to get a good lather. This is scent is light but refreshing as I get mostly orange from it. It paired great with my new Tonsorial Parlour splash as that has that citrus and floral body to it. Happy Tuesday!

      More water more soap!

I have started to pick up on more of the cedarwood and black pepper as I’ve used the soap more. It’s really a great scent.

    Tuesday, April 22, 2025

    • Brush: Maggard - 24mm synthetic bulb
    • Razor: BIC Sensitive
    • Lather: Barrister and Mann - Lime
    • Post Shave: Fine - Italian Citrus Aftershave splash
    • Fragrance: Stirling - Arkadia EdT

Very good results with a mediocre-but-fine razor.

I’ve really been impressed by this brush. It’s lower density than the other synths I have, but still lathers like a champ.

Very nice and comfortable 3-pass shave with an edge just off a newly acquired La Veinette coticule.

The confidence that I had with yesterday’s shave seems to have withered in the wind. This shave wasn’t bad, but a couple of close calls made me second guess myself (rightfully so). I’m quite tired, so probably shouldn’t have even tried!

This is my second SOTD post today, but my first one was actually from last night. I had to switch to a night shave for work, and this is just an attempt to switch back.

    • I’m quite tired

At least for your first 50 shaves, you should not use a straight razor when tired. I can feel quite clearly that my fine motor skills decline with the hour of the day, and I made a rule not to shave with a straight anymore after 22:00.

I agree. Luckily I didn’t get anything more than a couple of weepers and some razor burn. I learned my limit and will know to put the straight away next time.

  • Tridi 3 Floréal an 233 de la Révolution, jour de Fougère

Today happens to be the day of Fougère, but I unfortunately missed this. So, Tabac Tuesday + Koorat not Moarteen.

    Have a good evening!
