Developed for clandestine operations in the soviet union during the 1980s, this pistol is very neat as it uses it’s own special 7.62x41 cartridge which features a self contained piston between the powder charge and the projectile, thus when fired all the gases and muzzle flash are contained inside the shell case as it is ejected, making it one of the quietest guns ever made even without a suppressor on the muzzle. It is in fact so quiet the loudest sound produced when firing it is from the action of the metal parts.
holy shit…
Yeah it’s not just quiet it also produces no muzzle flash
Rest in PSS
Ah fuck that rules
Here it is in action https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHy5ep_Tt8Q
Notice the sound of the wind is considerably louder than the report from the pistol
whisper quiet
Yeah I swear my pellet gun is louder.
That is crazy. I guess it’s just a niche tech because the bullets are way more complicated to make? Or does it have durability / accuracy implications? A silent pistol probably doesn’t need to be good at long range or even last very long given its purpose…
I imagine its just rare because it is highly specialized and was a Soviet government secret project, they actually made a revolver later, the OTS 38, which fires the same round so it was successful enough to iterate on. The OTS 38 went into production in 2002, but the PSS is apparently still in use.
Oh cool, so they’re not a museum piece. Very neat.
its not niche tech you just never hear from it because too silent
Haha it’s shooting all the time, but you’ll never hear it coming
damn it sounds like it’s dryfiring!
I found a YouTube link in your comment. Here are links to the same video on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:
Its sounds like an old camera. Crazy
Exactly once it gets that quiet it doesn’t need to be literally silent. Who is gonna hear that and be like “That was a gun”. Even the sound of the round hitting the target is as loud as the pistol itself
