After I saw James Cameron’s comments about the Lakota people “if they had a time window they would have simply fought harder against their oppressors” I want him to fuck off forever and never touch a camera or script ever again.

“This was a driving force for me in the writing of Avatar,” Cameron reportedly added. “I couldn’t help but think that if they [the Lakota Sioux] had had a time-window and they could see the future… and they could see their kids committing suicide at the highest suicide rates in the nation… because they were hopeless and they were a dead-end society – which is what is happening now – they would have fought a lot harder.”

Like seriously go fuck yourself James.

Idk, I get why it’s problematic, but with foresight could’ve always started killing colonizers sooner.

It’d be kinda psychopathic to start killing every euro you came across in 1500 or whenever without that foreknowledge.

I don’t think most people anticipated how evil and totalizing the colonizers would be until much later. Even by 1800 it was too late to stop them, probably even earlier.

I get that. Watching what he did during the Abyss was convincing enough for me to say he’s not a good person. He puts his “art” above human life and treating people with dignity.

But I think the quote, charitably speaking, meant how today the indigenous people live a poor life because of the actions of the white suprematist state. I’m somewhat inclined to give him that charity because I know he was there fighting for indigenous rights in Brazil. And there’s the clear pro-indigenous narrative in the Avatar movies. So, it seems like he’s a “white saviour” type at best which is obviously problematic but in a different way than that quote.

And I can be totally wrong about this. I haven’t looked into it anymore than this. Maybe he really feels it’s the indigenous people’s fault they got genocided for not fighting harder. In which case, yeah, get fucked Cameron.
