The Three Mile Island nuclear facility accident in Pennsylvania, USA, had happened in 1979, which was recent memory at the year of publication 1982.
Of course the release of radiation was nothing compared to the Chernobyl nuclear plant disaster in the then-Soviet Union a few years later in 1986.
The radiation that comes from sigarettes is pretty heckin’ insane. And it’s in your face.
I am very glad you can no longer smoke inside public places in the states any longer. Now if vaping would get banned the same way, and smoking in doorways to buildings.

I’d love this too, but it could cause significant backlash from current smokers. I think the most practical solution might be a gradual ban on the sale of cigarettes, e.g. no one born after 2010 will be allowed to buy cigarettes.
That would lead to the same result, just over a longer amount of time. That’s my preferred kind of approach to a ban
