In particular, this button is useful if you want to view a post/comment which has embedded images from another instance. Hexbear’s UI doesn’t embed images hosted on other servers as a measure to prevent your browser from automatically contacting third party servers. Some Fediverse platforms attempt to cache all third-party media locally (like Mastodon, with enormous storage requirements) so your browser is only connecting to your home instance, but on Lemmy, images are normally hot-linked to their original instance.
