People online being surprised that there are countless people that really like avatar is weird. Like ~400 million people have seen the orginal by now and it was mostly very well recieved and one of the best theater experience a lot of them had, especially during its initial release where it broke the box office. Its one of the most popular blockbusters ever in almost every country outside of America .
Its just that most people that like it arent terminaly online and in anglo internet spaces that meme and post “takes” about movies or entertainment and participate in “discourse”. They are mostly normal 35+ year old people living their lives around the globe that really liked the first movie , didnt think about it more than 10 times since and now went out to watch the sequel and really like it as well
Also its a amazing looking and well paced action drama blockbuster by james cameron. Of course its loved by dozens of million , its not that weird. AT least it has non bad politics

Well come on now, MCU does consistently well but we all know its for morons. Avatar isnt really that heavy or different from MCU it just has themes you like. Doesn’t make it good timeless movie or change the fact that the people who created the movie weren’t heavily exploited.
Avatar is actually art created with vision and direction. Marvel is corporate cookie cutter slop that is one step up from ai art in terms of purposeful creation.
That’s definitely where it started on twitter and here. I think what happened is Felix’s bit got a lot of people to actually rewatch it and since they hadn’t seen it in over a decade they were surprised by how well it held up (Thats what happened with me at least). The other (more important) aspect of it would be that the sequel started to be advertised and that got a lot more people rewatching/talking about it. I’m fairly sure the latter happened first and then chapo talking about it just made it relevant in spaces we regularly use.
The other thing to consider is that you have all the other people who haven’t seen it in 13 years and just kinda buy into the cultural meme about it being a bad movie that has no “cultural staying power”, because they’re discussing a movie from 2009 like it was released last year and everyone forgot about it.
That’s what I did, the Chapo episode made me go “Huh I don’t remember it that well, I’ll check that out again” and it was in fact great

Avatar is a hard-working, earnest proletarian normie movie that has universal appeal everywhere on Earth, and a nice simple story with good themes
Irony poisoned film snobs and capekiddies will never understand. They think what makes a good movie is a convoluted story filled with twists, or references to pop culture and lore, or 4th wall breaking winks at the audience. They have turned into robots who clap when they see thing they recognize, or who have a checklist of what makes a “good movie” and are not enjoying the art as art, but as a process they believe themselves involved in (they aren’t, the algorithm has full control)

I’m obviously saying it a bit tongue in cheek, but I also mean that the audience who enjoys Avatar tends to be poorer and more in the developing world than average audiences for Hollywood blockbusters
Where are you getting that it’s the developing world enjoying Avatar? All the stats seem to point to developed Asian countries loving it the most with the only major developing country being India.
