For some perspective, Osamu Tezuka began drawing Astro Boy before Sputnik was launched, and kept drawing it up until the Space Shuttle was operational - from the mid-1950s to 1981. That’s almost thirty years of comics. To be honest, he ran out of ideas after about 7-8 years, and then he started getting repetitive, going kooky, doing reboots, retcons, time travel, introducing Poochie-level characters, and occasionally he slipped in some barely veiled fetish content. It really was the Simpsons of its era. I wonder what Walt Disney would have drawn if he had lived and animated Mickey Mouse through the 1970s and early 80s. Astro Boy did some fucked up stuff during those 30 years, including committing two separate genocides against two separate alien species. Some of the Astro Boy stories were surprisingly dark and tragic, which was interesting.
