    Yeah, it should be no surprise that places left behind are susceptible to hard right demagogues.

    Interestingly, Liverpool in the eighties went hard left but it could definitely be argued that Derek Hatton was a demagogue too.

      Liverpool went (and stayed) left because local businesses stopped selling The Sun after its coverage of the Hillsborough disaster. The Murdoch tabloid has been a key driver in moving the British working class to the populist right from the Thatcher era onwards.
