Hello comrades and welcome to the fifth improvement megathread of March! bonfire There’s only one more day of March left, it’s a good time to make some plans or intentions for April.

Some discussion ideas:

  • How was your March?
  • Do you have any plans for April?

Poster caption: “The victorious growth of Socialism in the USSR will find its expression in the great growth of socialist based national cultures.”

spoiler

The woman illustrated on the poster is wearing an Uzbek costume, and she is a Soviet-era depiction of educational success. Her education came about through the campaign of Likbez (Liquidation of Illiteracy).

With Likbez, an individual became “semi-literate” after six to eight hours a week of study over three months. An additional six to eight months of study was then required to achieve full literacy. The Likbez Commission re-doubled its efforts among the population to reach the target of full, national literacy in time for the tenth anniversary of the October Revolution (1927).

Likbez withered after its commission missed the goal for October 1927. In time, the government closed the literacy centers and the resources once earmarked for them were put towards technical and higher education programs during Stalin’s First Five-Year Plan (1928–32).

I benched 220 and this whole week is going to be all about making sure everything goes right that I’m joining the 225 club by the end of this week. My plans for April are to finally begin my cut and drop some weight and maybe see abs for the first time in my life. I don’t know, maybe I’ll find a good sport to get into or something.

Along the way, I want to fix these two things about me: I want a job where I can finally GTFO Ohio. In the mean time, I want to better research what kind of stuff I might like and be good at and then try to go for a master’s in that. Work is only going to become more and more of a rare treasure and I’d like to be prepared and also have a job I like.

What can I do to help me better understand what I might like? For people here, was your major/job love at first sight or did you really have to put in a lot of effort to like it?

Hot boy Summer. Go get 'em bro!

I want a job where I can finally GTFO Ohio.

A reasonable response to being in Ohio.

Personally I like computers and math. Luckily that happens to be a “profitable” profession, but even it weren’t I think i’d still want to go into computers and math. My general advice is find something you enjoy in your life or at very least something you find interesting and start from there and branch out. So long it’s vaguly rooted in something you genuinely kinda dig can explore and find something that overlaps your skills and interests and hopefully can earn some decent scratch.

My March was kinda not great, I continued taking the L due to health issues. But I still tried my best and made a bit of progress. I did a lot of reading this month, I was reading almost every day.

In April I want to be more physically active, go walking and running, do some core/back exercises, stretching, microexercises and so on. I also want to touch grass because the weather should be good touch-grass

Microexercises are awesome because they take very little effort so you can knock out a lot of them in a day. Write down how many you did and you will be surprised at how much exercise you did by the end of the week. Especially if your goal is weight loss, increasing your movement throughout the day can quickly add up

  • Been sick as a dog all week but still fitting in some exercise. Haven’t read nearly as much as I wanted to this month, and I was hoping to be fully employed by the end of the month, but I suppose those are now my April goals lol. Overall it’s been a good month; I exceeded my weight gain goals, sent hundreds more job applications, wrote some programs, and didn’t miss a day of language learning. To put some more concrete goals down for April: I want to journal daily, keep up the language and exercise rigor, check some books off my reading list, and find full time work.

      I want to journal daily

It’s really a cheat-code to discipline. I know it’s a bit cliche, but just writing down your thoughts daily will really help you recalibrate somethings and it’s one of those things that’s truly zero cost (other than the time to do it and being honest with yourself if you count those as costs) and it’s all benefit. You lose nothing and gain a lot by doing it.

keep up the language and exercise rigor

Which language are you learning? May I also ask for what reason? Just for fun? Or maybe to travel?

check some books off my reading list

I will always encourage everyone to hit up their local library and check out books. It gives a bit of an artificial time limit and for me at least it forces me to actually read the damn book.

      find full time work.

      Same brother. Same.

I’m learning French and Mandarin! French because i have familial ties, my grandparents spoke it and I knew little bits that were passed down to me. I would love to visit or live in France, I have plans around it but don’t want to get too specific here. But I’m at a CEFR B2 level there

Mandarin because we’re in the Chinese century and I’d love to have the opportunity to visit and maybe work or study in China one day. I just got through my HSK 1 curriculum in March

    March was a mixed bag.

Back on the gym grind and I’ve been able to stick to my routine a lot better now that my work schedule has normalized. Feeling great and lost a few extra pounds so im starting to get more confident in my looks as well.

Work has been just a bit more stressful this year and March didn’t really improve things much. Still working out how to be a better lead/manager in so far as critiquing work and following up on that.

Spoke to a couple of old friends the past couple weeks which was cool. But also just feels like im still so distant from people and I want to work on those relationships.

I crushed it last week in the gym but still no job. This friday plan on taking my forklift certification test and getting that on my resume. I also got some longer term plans for some training I wanna try when open in june and an even longer goal plan in trying to apply for a localish union to learn heavy machine operations as an apprentice. Been looking over everything I need for that and I decided that’s what I wanna do mean time local forklift jobs best be ready for me niko-happy once I pass that is.

A few days early, but since it’s the weekly thread time I’ll claim my 4th month nicotine free. I’ve now not had any smokes for the longest stretch since I started smoking in high school. Not much else is going great, but despite some very shitty and stressful circumstances this month I have stayed clean.

Sleep Foundation has a lot of good advice for sleep. My life hack is to sprinkle a few drops of lavender essential oil on a tissue or pillowcase before sleep, it’s relaxing and helps you fall asleep easier

      Hell yeah!

Love to see those positive feedback loops. It’s one of those things I wish more katz realized that fixing one thing often makes easier to fix other things, on a personal and social level as a matter fact!

March was pretty solid in the LGOrcStreetSamurai part of the universe. I’m making strides in a lot of areas but I’m also realizing two things.

The first being how far I have to go to get where I want to be in terms of physique, mental acumen, reading, and generally all my goals. I have quite a long road ahead of me and it won’t be easy either. I’m very glad I’m making progress, but it’s one of those things you don’t realize how far you are until you start moving towards something. Staying still in has been detrimental in the sense I stagnated a lot over the last couple of years and being in motion for a few months doesn’t magically fix everything.

The second thing i realized was how bad a lot of areas of my life was. For example I didn’t realize just how depressed I had been until i cleaned out my apartment and i realized I hadn’t really cleaned it in months. Which is kind shameful in a sense but then again you don’t think about your chains until you try and move. Yeah it sucks, part of breaking the chains yanking on them and hit them over rocks and all those sorts of things. I was really in a bad spot for a long time and i’m not quite out of it but I think people don’t really realize how bad things are until you take account of conditions. Which is part of the reason I think people don’t do it because it’s really sad to see how shitty things are for real. Taking a honest and sober account of things makes you realize how fucked things are.

However, I see that an opportunity to at least start trying. Yes I’m in debt and unhappy and a host of other things, but i’m taking action to address them and actively doing better in a lot of ways so I’m very proud of myself in that sense. I’m also really happy that katz like @moonlake@hexbear.net do these weekly threads because I really benefit from knowing that internet people I will likely never ever know are also struggling and getting better too.
