The climax came when police arrived and faced an absurd choice: arrest innocent civilians for hitting a barrel or confiscate the barrel itself. They chose the latter, creating an unforgettable image of two officers hauling away the battered container. Photos of the incident made opposition newspaper covers, making the feared police look “like a bunch of comically inept dweebs,” according to Popovic.

I am pretty sure that this was a calculated response rather than a sign of incompetence. The FRY surely could have dispatched more officers if it wanted to, but the Yugoslav police clearly had bigger worries on their hands than a crowd of people taking their anger out on an image of the President.

This creative protest helped launch Otpor, the nonviolent movement that eventually brought down Milosevic’s regime.

I am unconvinced that Milošević was autocratic, but even if he were, it is a massive exaggeration to claim that it was a nonviolent movement that ended his career.

Likewise, humour is merely a means for us to relieve pressure, not overthrow a régime:

Political jokes were not a form of resistance. They were a release valve for pent-up popular anger. People told jokes in their neighborhood bars or on the street because they coveted a moment of liberation in which they could let off a bit of steam. That was in the interests of the [Fascist] leadership, no matter how humorlessly they may have portrayed themselves in the public sphere.

Many Germans were conscious of the dark side of the [Third Reich]. They were also annoyed at laws forcing them to do this or that and at party bigwigs who treated themselves to lives of luxury while making arbitrary decisions about the lives of others. But that didn’t translate into anti[fascist] protests. Those people who let off a bit of steam with a few jokes didn’t take to the streets or otherwise challenge the [Fascist] leadership.

I am assuming that you are sharing this piece in good faith, so I am not going to chastise you. But all that this article is really doing is selling people a fantasy. Plenty of people have been taking their anger out on images of Donald Trump since the 2010s, and it was nowhere close to the beginning of the end for his career.
