Aaah! So much excitement! I managed to stay awake for the first half of Makuuchi but passed out during halftime, just before the Tobizaru-Ura bout! Luckily I woke up before the last 2 bouts of the tourney!

(edit: for those unaware, I was falling asleep not because it was boring but because it was 4am due to time difference with Japan.)

Anyway, if you watch the summary video you’ll see a lot of awesome sumo. It’s kind of funny to see Aonishiki after his match, he has his usual expression of humility mixed with something that looks a lot like: ‘holy cow I just beat a Sekiwake!’ It was a heck of a match too, it really showed off his mix of fundamentals and his varied skills. And then of course there are the championship matches, which are a real roller-coaster, the exact shape of which depends on how you feel about Takayasu and Onosato.

      yusho

Poor Takayasu-- that was his 3rd playoff loss after 2 previous ones in 2022. I worry that it was his last chance at it at age 35-- even Hakuho was having trouble putting up wins in his mid-30s.

I wonder who the oldest yusho was. I tried looking on sumodb but I don’t understand the query function on that site very well.

ed: Hakuho’s last win was at 36. Looks like Kyokutenho won once when he was 35. That might be about the limit.

Yeah, everyone who was in contention for yusho the last day did a great job, IMHO, and none of them have anything to be ashamed of.

I’d heard of sumodb but never tried it out myself til now! Yeah that interface is indeed inneresting, I’ma have to look it over some more some time.

It’s true, age can really drag you down, I speak feelingly as an older guy who still tries to do competitive sports once in a while…
