This is not new, this was implied through most of TOS, and I belive the first explicit indication, I cannot remember if they used the world capitalism but they did specificaly mention that the 21st century uses money unlike there entire lifetime, and it was indicated they did not know the value of how much money was worth as seen by Kirk asking if $100 was alot of this was in Star Trek the Voyage home.

Not just TOS but pretty much all of the original Trek series is so apparent idk why people are thinking it’s so crazy and radical that they had someone say this in SNW. TNG makes a habit of talking about how they advanced past the need for material wealth and everyone is provided for etc. DS9 brings it up regularly too. Voyager less often but it’s in there.

I always feel slightly annpyed with DS9 because while they talk about it with Quarc and contrast with Firangi, I do wish thsy showed more confusion with hpw capitalism works like we saw in the voyage home

In First Contact Picard explains the death of capitalism and he didn’t actually use the word socialism but it is strongly implied. Communism is a subset of socialism that implies that nobody has personal property or wealth. However I would say that it’s not communism because people do have personal property. People are no longer motivated by greed but Picard says “we seek to improve ourselves and strive for the betterment of humanity” or something to that effect.

I would suspect that the invention of replicator technology pretty much negates any need for money since you can just replicate anything you need / want. There is a credit system based on merit so your contributions are recognized and what you can obtain is largely governed by your rank / position. The credit system is mostly based on energy rather than materials, as in TNG / DS9 for example, people have transporter credits that limit energy consumption on a per person basis.

The government doesn’t seem to limit other kinds of wealth people can acquire which is implied on DS9 several officers collect intergalactic wealth for example in the form of gold plated latinum. But it doesn’t appear that it is necessary to collect any wealth. All the requirements to have a good life are met so people can in essence apply themselves in any way they want (or optionally not at all) so artists and creatives mostly seek recognition instead.

Picard also mentions that Starfleet does participate in a barter system with other races, suggesting that any monetary needs are instead met with trade of raw materials (e.g. dilithium) or services provided in return for goods.

I remember soyjacking when I caught this line on my first watch because it’s like, I think the only explicit reference to their society as socialist? In the main series ‘canon’ anyway.
