    Image Transcription:

A still of Verne the turtle from the movie Over the Hedge looking around a fancy garden in wary confusion. Text at the top of the image reads “The Virus bundled in the sketchy Itch.io game running in a wine bottle.” Subtitles on the image read “What is this place?”

[I am a human, if I’ve made a mistake please let me know. Please consider providing alt-text for ease of use. Thank you. 💜]

To add to the other security conscious comments, even if you wanted to run a VM, there are attacks that escalpe the VM and hit the underlining OS

    Computers are inherently insecure

Totally, difficult but by no means impossible. I think we should be cautious and have less hubris when it comes to computer security, that was my point

But “wine bottle” implies running the program in a sandbox. Unless you aren’t using Bottles in a flatpak.

Is there no website to check them before installing? Or it is not worth the time in Linux? Similar to VM or sandboxed system?>

    Something similar to: https://www.virustotal.com/gui/home/upload

I use it to check APK downloads before putting it on my phone.

    Anyone know more about this?

You can use virustotal for any game/file under 650MBs; This meme was created as a joke, good security practices should always be followed.

No anti virus will be 100% accurate, viruses get missed all the time, while legitimate software can acquire false flags.

I would never recommend just running a random .exe you find on the internet with wine as any non-root protected files could potentially be damaged; With Bottles (the application) all files outside of the created bottle are not visible to programs ran/installed inside the bottle.

If you really want to try something, throwing caution to the wind, running it in a wine BOTTLE that’s created just for that program, has a low chance of damaging your computer. (This does not mean “safe”)

Especially if you have Bottles installed as the Flatpak.

Sand-boxing only works fully if you have the Flatpak; Thanks for mentioning this as I forgot to specify!

          No problem!

The pursuit of knowledge is endless; It’s good to ask questions, but always do your own research too, as myself or anyone else could not know what they’re talking about.
