The best evidence against the accusations of genocide is the fact that Chinese people and the state itself is completely fine with the expression and acknowledgement of Xinjiang and Uyghur’s culture.
Now, I won’t say that there arent racial dynamics at play, because just because you’re not subject to genocide doesn’t mean the state can’t impose a monolithic cultural identity onto you (Eg. how “British” identity is imposed onto member states of the UK).
I’m sure there are internal -isms being applied to groups on the periphery of the Chinese sociopolitical system, but what tells me it’s moreso discrimination than genocide is that we know what genocidal states do regarding expression of the identity in question - they bury it, flatten it, outlaw it, beat it.
If what is happening to the Uyghurs is truly genocide ( at least in the eyes of the western world), the west would have to treat Turkey, Jolani’s Syria, Israel, Ethiopia, Sweden, and many more states within the same principles.
Until then, we can be sure that China and the West are in tacit agreement that China’s political control of Xinjiang is not genocidal in nature.
