    I’ve heard that they grew trees this way on purpose for the construction of boat keels. This forest may have been planted then abandoned with the adoption of metal boat hulls.

    Unrelated, but Native Americans did this in the US to mark trails. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trail_trees

    It’s cool that you can still easily identify them to this day.
