    Explanation: Romans had a curious propensity to butcher each other, and then lament the decline of the Empire. An astute individual may notice that these things are quite possibly connected.

        I have several disagreements with the conclusions (and the idea that the 4th century AD Imperial administration was a step up from the preceding system), but an interesting and thought provoking piece!
