There is a rhythm system in battles, if you press attack to the beat of the song you’ll get extra attacks, I think up to 8. I could only get to maybe 3 or 4 consecutive strikes.
Emulators also don’t handle this too well.

The highest combo is up to 16, and you get a little cheering SFX if you manage to do it
Talk to everyone, the writing is even better in this one, and there are good moments far off the beaten path
Mother 3 remains one of my favorite games of all time to this day. It is incredible from top to bottom. Writing is amazing. Gameplay is amazing. Everything is interesting. The only problem the game has is how the Magypsies are written. It’s extremely problematic with what I perceive as homophobia, transphobia, and implied SA. So be warned.
Get the tissues ready.
And try a few different emulators to see which make the rhythm combat most doable. The input lag is wobbly.
