Americans are getting dental implants more than ever — and at costs reaching tens of thousands of dollars. Experts worry some dentists have lost sight of the soul of dentistry: preserving and fixing teeth.

I had a dental surgeon tell me with a straight face that a non-problematic wisdom tooth with nerves wrapped around it should be taken out, and there was a very real possibility I’d lose feeling in my jaw for an indeterminate amount of time.

I told him leave it there and he was full surprised-pika

I just remembered the second part of this story.

Originally I had just 1 top one removed, I wanted to do top and bottom separately.

By the time I got around to the bottom one, it righted itself and was no longer dangerous to rip out. I cant even remember which ones I got out at this point, I know I only pulled 3/4. That’s how unproblematic the fourth was. I only got the other pulled because they were getting cavities from their bastard positioning.

The dental surgeons looked at me with disdain when I didn’t fund their car payment on unneeded work. Simply waiting made it go from “very risky” to non-issue and not a single dentist/surgeon thought of it as a possibility for me.

I remember hearing some people in California just have dentists in Mexico because of how utterly untrustworthy American dentistry is, idk about Canada however.

That’s literally how Southern California operates, if you’re lower “middle” class you go to Mexico for your medication, dental, hearing, and eye. Usually things not covered by medical insurance.

We just left a practice because of this. Dentist wanted to pull out my mom’s teeth and give her implants, then got pissed when she said no. New dentist says all she needed is some crowns and fillings. A full replacement is just excessive and unnecessary.

Real talk: what are y’all’s deals on surgical tourism for vasectomies? $1500 for one in the SStates is fucking bullshit.

I’m set for one end of next week and barely only considered going on a vacation to Mexico for one after I started to see the cost even after insurance. It’s too late for me since I’ve already paid but gonna keep it in mind. I was mainly asking for options for my AMAB friends who may consider it as an option in the future. Thanks for the info!

It breaks down to a $100 consultation + co-pay, $560 to the ball doctor, then $869 for the procedure. I also had to pay $15 as a fuck you fee(I don’t really know what it was for). So $1,549 total + the $20 THC vape I’ve been saving for recovery.

It really sucks how we haven’t evolved the ability to grow teeth back. We wouldn’t have to deal with these dentist assholes as much if we did

When I am appointed to the People’s Council of Cellular Engineering, this will be among my mid-top priorities, solidly no more than 25% of the way down the list.

Something like this happened to my sister. She had a dentist drill and fill her teeth where there were supposedly cavities, and it turns out that those cavities never existed. She was supposed to go back for a follow up, ended up not going back after finding that out.

This is what happened to me a couple years ago and I don’t even live in the US. I ended up with a bad cavity and my dentist extracted the tooth. I found out not long after that the tooth could have easily been saved. Thankfully it’s only one of my back teeth so no one even realises I’m missing one.

No shit. Dentistry is a racket. I’ve been like twice in the last decade and I’m fine. Just brush your teeth lol. Last time I went was before corona hit and the guy did x rays and said I needed to get my bottom wisdom teeth out. I couldn’t afford that shit so nearly five years later they’re still in there and I’m fine.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don’t post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.
