    Now a year after the commercial launch, the Lower Saxony state ministry has abandoned ideas for future hydrogen trains, arguing that battery-electric models “are cheaper to operate.”

      Battery? Why would a train need a battery? Just electrify the tracks?

        Cheaper to build a charger at a station than to electrify very old track sections

          Yeah, many rail sections in Europe are not electrified. Battery-electric is definitely better than diesel.

            https://www.statista.com/statistics/451522/share-of-the-rail-network-which-is-electrified-in-europe/ for the curious. Switzerland is the only European country with 100%, next closest are at 75-90%, EU average is 56%.

    “has died a quick death” seems like a bit of stretch. The article itself lists other countries which are testing and trying to adopt the hydrogen trains as well.
