Telegram is Russian software with company seat in Dubai… They aren’t end to end encrypted and in general have a habit of being very for profit.
The HN discussion seems to be plagued by pretty uninformed positions.

E2e chats have to be created by long-pressing on a contact and then choosing a menu option. The default tap starts normal e2s chats. Group chats are e2s as well.

I don’t know how much of this is directed by Kremlin. Maybe Signal is catching ground in Russia’s neighborhoods? The government-backed Telegram is losing users to Signal, maybe? Russia would want to spy on such users.
